Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Where would you go next week?

Super Pupa
Hey guys,

If you had a choice of anywhere to fish within a 10 hour drive of the NY/NJ area, where would you go given the recent weather?

Me and a buddy of mine had a trip planned for next week that got severely rained out, and we don't have the luxury of changing vacation time. We're willing to drive anywhere that's actually fishable, but trying to stay under 10 hours away.

Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

Impossible to say at the moment with the northeast rivers still rising from the (now passed) t-storms. I'm in the same boat with an annual WBD trip next Wed - Sat. Screw it, we're going. We'll find fishable water somewhere and many rivers and streams will drop to safe levels by then.

SALMON RIVER FOR SOME SLOPPY DROPPIES!!! It will be good fishing till ATLEAST second weekend in may... TONS AND TONS OF DROPPIESSSSSS

3.5 hours: Big Spring Creek, Letort Spring Run, Yellow Breeches
4 hours: Falling Spring Branch
4.5 hours: Spring Creek, Penns Creek
4.5 hours: Kettle Creek, Young Womans Creek
5 hours: I am here in the Shenandoah NP, so the first beer is on me.
5.5 hours: Millers River, Swift River
7 hours: Presumpscot River
10 hours: East outlet of the Kennebec River
12 hours: GSMNP. No question, the major hotels have generator power, CG's don't, only reason I left this morning.
Water levels & fishing were OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AK,

We were considering the South Holston in Tennessee and some other creeks in the Cherokee National Forest.

Do you have any info on that area? As for the smokies, I know there are tons of little mountain streams, but are there any mid sized streams that can accommodate 2 guys?

PM me if you prefer. Thanks

I vote for the south Holston. I grew up in NC and spent a lot of time hiking th trails in the GSMP. Ashville is a way cool town to base out of, not quite southern, not quite mountain.

According to the park service ther are 2115 miles of streams for fishing.

Hell if your willing to go that far to the H. Might as well go to West Central Va. Beaver creek and some other local Streams. Beaver is a Spring creek. I went there a couple years ago and it was a tight wild trout stream. Awesom fish though. There is another pay creek also cant remember the name. Also ther is the watuaga which is closer.

Franklin County NY, back ponds and lakes
Bennington and Windham Counties, VT, back ponds, lakes and res, as well as any lower level tribs high up
Berkshire County, MA, mainly higher elevation ponds, the streams are high but most are not flood stage, none are as roaring as NY, still its dicey wading on some.

Bonus is its Turkey Season in all those places too.

I was to take a drive unfortunately this year I am not able to take the trip. I favorite trout stream is the ST Regis. 6 hours drive for me.

ST Regis is one of my favorite rivers ever...The dark tannic water, trecherous rocks, and HUGE browns keep me coming back year after year :)

Tom,

Yup...

Where's your fav, spot?

The old bridge section of the regis is beautiful and I even have gotten some nice natives (4-6'')...Not to mention, the avg 16-18'' browns that hide down there :)

My friend has a cabin that grandfathered into Adirondack National Forest. This cabin is deep in the woods. No hot water, No electricity, No cell service. it but it is fun. An old Franklin Wood stove to cook on. It is roughing it but a lot of fun. It is a 2 mile goat path to get to the cabin. He has an old Jeep that he has parked at the entrance of the path that we truck back to the cabin in. The Jeep has no brakes. We have to get out and toss a rock in front of the tire to stop it. Every time we go we have to get out of the Jeep and cut apart a few beaver dams to open up the trail. We catch quite a few fish behind the cabin it is like a private club. My favorite water is in the park just out side of ST Regis.

I think it is on RT30 of just off of it

It’s balmy up there right now 39°

My buddies are up there right now... They stock this week on the Regis...I can't wait! But those little pesky 'bows they put in now can be annoying...I LOVE catching those BIG holdovers at the base of the falls...Mmmmm

When I go up it is usually the 1st or 2nd week of June. I know that I need to bring these 2 flies with me. Green Drakes Emerges, Duns and Spinners. And my second is a 3” long black Wooly Bugger with mo metal head. They are not the only flies. But their the ones I consistently hammer them on. I noticed the Green Drakes up there and I do not know how it is on other rivers. They come off sporadically. I see some pop up and then 5-10 minuets some more pop up. But when they are comming off it is the best. The fish can not resist them. Even the smart natives.

Ill be up June 1-5...Hope to see ya...

I hammered the fish on an GD Emerger on the Ausable last season..biggest hatch of them I ever seen....NO surface rises, all subsurface...was strange... Hotwire prince/size 4 rusty bugger/ and stimulators are my top 3 for st regis... :)
