Hancock resident Stephen D. Esolen, 24, faces felony burglary and weapon charges.

A Delaware County man was arrested Tuesday after he was found to be in possession of explosives and stolen jewelry, New York State Police said Thursday.

Hancock resident Stephen D. Esolen, 24, was charged with second-degree burglary, third-degree burglary and three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, all felonies.

The arrest stemmed from an investigation into the burglary of an estate property in Hancock. During that probe, state police in Deposit BCI developed a suspect, who they learned was in possession of several blasting caps and a large amount of C4 explosive.

New York State Police BCI and the Bomb Disposal Unit executed a search warrant at the suspect’s home at 2488 County Highway 67 in Hancock. Police said the search resulted in the seizure of 12 electric detonators, four M60 igniters, a rifle with a homemade silencer and stolen jewelry.

Further investigation led to the recovery of about 20 pounds of C4 explosive that the suspect had buried on an adjacent property, according to state police.

Esolen was arraigned in Hancock Town Court and sent to the Delaware County jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail. The investigation is ongoing.

State police were assisted by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.

On Wednesday, additional investigation by the state police Deposit BCI resulted in the search of the estate property and the seizure of several smoke grenades, gas grenades, incendiary grenades, signal flares, packs of fuse igniter and two aerial bombs.

At this time, state police said, there are no additional charges or defendants in this case.
