Toothy critter setup?!

Picture-Taker // Fish Scare-er
I've been fishing topwater for bass at a reservoir by my house. I was unaware but there seems to be a fair amount of Muskie or pike maybe, anyway... Hooked into a big one today (google image search lets me think it wasn't really that big for that species, but for me, HUGE) fought it well and got it to my feet and it turns and snaps the line. Then, it happened again with another!

I'm fishing 3x leaders and tippet ( I think that's 9lb test) as a basic bass setup, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to be more prepared for these fish that have sharp teeth? Thanks for any advice

Or you could not be so fancy and tie a little wire leader to the hook...
also long shank hooks can help as the hook will be the part getting bit, rather than the line.....we have a couple spots near me for the toothy guys as well...they are fun....A buddy git a 36 inch tiger and a 38 inch northern in an hour the other day...he slings meat though and was using small trout as bait.....one their favorite foods...

There are myriads of different tie-able wire tippet materials on the market. I use them for blues in the surf all of the time. The long shank hook trick works sometime, but not always. Wire bite tippets work all of the time.

24"-30" of 15-20lb mono tied to 6" of bite wire with a small coastlock snap tied to the bite wire. Makes changing flies easy and doesn't foul when casting. Keep the leader short with the big flies. Those fish are not line shy and use big, gaudy flies. For cheap bite wire that ties knots pretty well, go to Michael's and get Beadalon wire.

I've heard about the beadalon wire before, but prior to that i actually picked up the Cortland 'toothy critter' tippet wire and will let you know how that works out this week.

The "fishing" bite tippet is about ten bucks for ten feet. The Beadalon wire is about eight bucks for thirty feet. I use the 19 strand .015 which has a 17 lb break strength. It also double duties for the wire I use to tie my articulated streamers.

I guess the real question is, is this setup going to scare off the bass I'm really going after? I'm really not trying to catch pile or Muskie, but they're apparently around and I'd love to stop losing flies to them.

I used to catch bass on a lure that was a small Budweiser beer can with two sets of trebles. Don't sweat the wire bite tippet:)

Went to michael's last night and picked up the beadalon, it's 6 bucks now for 75 feet! I also found out the kraft foam is about 900% cheaper than at a fly shop so.... Bonus.

So, I tie the beadalon to the leader yeah? Fly line ---> leader ---> 6 inches of wire?

Used the beadalon last night, worked out great. I didn't catch any Muskie or pike but the bass weren't at all scared by the wire, so things worked out perfectly. Thanks for the heads up!

Constantly stoked about the knowledge sharers on this site, thanks everyone
