Fly Lines Terenzio

So, about a year ago, my fly fishing benefactor gave me a hand-made Terenzio artificial silk line to use on my 3wt.......I have waited this long to write a review, because they say the line gets better with use and proper treatment, and will last a long time......

Anyway,
after a year of fishing with this line, and drying and greasing it after every outing, I must say.........
FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!

By far the best line I have ever used.......after 10-15 uses the line floats above the film, it almost seems to levitate slightly above the water.....mending the line is a pleasure.....and it only gets better the more you fish.....don't forget to dry and grease it....

It is thinner than a plastic line....more backing for all the 15# trout I know you all catch....

It loads the rod effortlessly...I think because of the weight of the grease, as more gets applied to the fore end of the line and permeates the faux silk the more you use it, adding extra weight forward.....

The cost is very high...about $180.00 a line, but if it lasts the twenty years they say it will...it is cheap!!!!!! Don't forget to dry and grease it after every use..it only takes a minute or two...

DO NOT fish in low temperatures with the line, as the grease will coagulate, and break the fine fibers in the line during casting.....

It also makes a sweet sound as it zips through the rods guides....

and, most importantly, you can act like a complete douchebag, because you are using silk line and all the other jerk-offs are using plastic..

basic recipe for one liter of used cooking oil.

1 liter of used cooking oil
200 grammes of caustic soda (NaOH)
400 milliliters of warm water
40 milliliters of softener for clothes

1. mesure the cooking oil and put on a recipient after filtering impurities out
2. mesure the water
3. weight the caustic soda
4. dissolve the caustic soda with the water (use mask, glasses and protection gloves because the mixture will boil and release toxic gases)
5. join the mixture with the oil
6. stir 15 minutes with a wooden spoon, until the prepared becomes consistent and put the softener for clothes to give the soap softness and fragrance
7. Kill yourself because you a disgusting hippie who smells like fish

Didn't they use Muscilin (not sure about the spelling) to treat silk lines in the old days? I seem to recall that there were two types that came in different color tins, red and yellow. One is better to float lines and the other for dry fly use.

I have heard that there were a couple of silk line manufacturers left but that they were expensive. So $180 qualifies in my book. For that price it better last as least 10 years. Does the manufacturer really say you can use cooking oil to treat the line?

Oh, and water and sodium hydroxide do not produce toxic fumes, assuming there are no other chemicals in the mix. The reaction does produce a lot of heat though and you do NOT want it to get on your skin or any other body surface.

It takes seconds.....and since it is fake silk (whatever that means) if your lazy ass forgets, it's OK...


No you can't use cooking oil to treat the line..it is scented, and if you were fishing in a TCA, a CO may give you a ticket for having scented tackle....

Don't knock it until you try it....

LU, I'm also turning into a silk line enthusiast. I purchased an inexpensive Zhu silk line last year, got it broken in with many applications of the paste that came with the line and with Red Mucilin, and fished it many times on a 4wt cane rod. I understand the axiom that you get what you pay for, and at $30, I'm well aware that I've got a cheaply made line, but even this line has advantages over my usual synthetic lines. It doesn't shoot through the guides as well as I'd like, but its small diameter allows the line to land super-softly on the water. I mostly have used it small stream fishing, where long casts aren't needed, but a gentle presentation that doesn't spook fish is a winning ticket. Someday, I'll have to pony up the dough and buy a good silk line that will also shoot for distance. A pain in the butt to take care of? No.... just strip the line into a brown paper grocery bag when you get home, let it dry overnight, then reel back on through a pad of the paste. I spend more time tying half of a fly!
