Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Stupid like a fox

loose loops, sink tips
Got out for a couple of hours on Friday night to see some old friends next to my favorite rock on the EB. Scattered rises, mostly finning browns eating emergers, with sporadic fish jumping here and there, chasing them right up to the surface. Mixed hatch - tan caddis, the occasional march brown, the occasional sulphur. Based on the rises, my fly fishing sixth sense told me they were taking the caddis.

Flossed three smaller fish on various caddis imitations but couldn't get the big guy to come to the table. He kept boiling right next to the rock - three years ago I would have written him off as a dink, but countless hours on the system has taught me better. With some brutal glare on the water, decided to be strategic - tied on a big, day-glo yellow sulfur comparadun - way bigger and way yellower than any I had seen - as an indicator fly that would be visible in the fading light. Greased 8 inches of flourocarbon and dropped a small iris caddis off of the big dun.

First cast had him and a while later (strong fish) I had the fattest 19-er I've ever caught in my hand. Feeling smug, I went to unhook him. He took the sulphur.

Nah, he was football shaped, so I just threw him into the woods two-handed, like a lateral pass. There were a bunch of turkey vultures in a dead tree that took care of him after that.

Any fish dumb enough to turn down my caddis emerger wouldn't have lasted long there anyway. My favorite spot on the EB becomes a minefield of pyramid weights and nightcrawlers on the weekends. :)
