Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

the river fox

I picked up some hand tied salt water flys from some of the ledgends of the sport, an ass kicking set of Van Staal pilers, and two of the best generic necks I have ever laid eyes on, and I got them both for $60.00:hubbahubba:.... As well as a bunch of frogs hair leaders at half price....AND I booked a trip to Georgia .... 2 weeks from now...... Can you say 10 pound brown trout in Feb....... I CAN.....

I got some fly tying stuff mostly odds and ends. Buy My best score was some Czech fly tying materials got some really cool dubbing blends and ribbing materials and my favorite dohiku hooks.

I picked up 3 Whiting Bronze necks, some mylar, beads, tinsel, lots of micro v-rib for tying larva.

I also picked up 1 hand tied bass bug by a guy I would certainly call a master at the art of spinning deer hair. The tyer is Pat Cohen and his patterns are over the top! The attached photo is a collection of patterns called "Punk Rockers". The bug in upper right hand is the one I purchased.

FYI, I'm looking to purchase a display case that will allow me to display the bug so all 4 sides are visible. If you're familiar with a display case like that please letPunk Rockers.jpg me know. I definitely want to put this fly on display in my tying room.

I watched that guy tie for a while he is no doubt a master at spinning deer hair.

i do think you're in for great disappointment if you're heading to the southern state of georgia expecting to get in to a 10 lb. brown in february. sure would have liked to hear that guide(s) try to pitch that sale, though.

So at the show I bought the following items:

1) 4 wet fly capes from Collins, THey were quality with some really great color at $5.00 a piece.

2) $ 36.00 worth of qaulity 4 pack duck quills by Spirit River. Mike Hogue (Badger Creek Fly Fishing) told me when I came buy what he had. I went through them and picked out the best ones and left a small amount of the rest.

3) A quality Hares Mask from Mike Hogue

4) A new Orivis 2 piece 8.6 ft 5 weight mid flex TLS Power Matrix fly rod for $180 (Great rod for casting wet flies). The rod was on sale for $199 and I talked him down a little more because the cork on the rod was not covered but in great shape and that I would also buy a reel from him for this rod.

5) Orvis Battenkill Bar Stock Reel BBS II for $80

6) Renewed two year subscriptions to Fly Tyer & Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Journal Magazine. Got a nice hat and a decent shirt I can use for camping.

7) Renewed my Catskill Fly Tyers Guild Membership

8) Bought and Donated a HMH Spartan Vise for $170 to the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild. This donation helps the club raise money by raffling off items like this at shows and major events. Who wouldn't want to take a $5.00 chance on a new vise like this.

The show was pleasent, fun and easy going on Friday. It was a little weird for me not tying in the show and having to pay $15.00 to get in. Next year I will be back in the show on tyers row, and just tye, talk to people and try and break away from the table to see the show for awhile. Any way I felt the show was better than last years. Had a chance to meet DC, AKSKIM (Dennis) and enjoyed hanging and speak ing with my fellow Guild Brothers. My favorite person who I enjoyed immensely talking to and thought he was one heck of a nice guy in person was Davy Wotton. I always enjoyed corresponding with him on Arron Jasper's web site but truly enjoyed speaking with him in person.

I purchased two necks, a grizzly and brown from Collins Farms. The necks have very nice hackles for $10.00 each. I found to be a great deal. I do not know how you can make a profit selling a quality neck for 10 bucks. It costs more then that to feed the chicken but who is complaining. Overall I found it to be a great deal. As you all know I am a cheep bastard. I truly do not like parting with my money. Money talks it seems to be the case that mine always says goodbye. But I did part with more cash then I wanted to. I found Marc Petitjean MP tying system to be so far ahead of the curve on innovation in tying and his techniques on the use of CDC to be so different and simple .I was amazed on what you can achieve. The system was a little pricey but I was impressed. I can not wait to try it out. I did go to a few of the free seminars and I found them to be a bit novice. Did anyone else get the same impression? But overall I had a great time at the show and it was well worth it.

I purchased some feathers from Charlie Collins, some ISO sparkle dubbing, renewed magazines, raffle tickets, hooks, 400 tungsten beads, a turtle shaped fly box, AJ's dvd, and my favorite item of the show......a hot pink magnetic nipper/zinger combo!
My girlie girl senses went on overload!
Oh, and I won a Brodin ghost net....not too shabby!

Well if he booked the trip through the guide I am thinking of he will have a pretty good shot at a trophy brown or rainbow. There are a few streams holding some very large trout in North Georgia. Heck you can catch a 10lb Brown on the Chattahoochee river on the outskirts of Atlanta with a little luck. The Soque is the river I am thinking of. There are 30 inch fish in that river for sure.

I attend the show for two days every year, primarily to look for new ideas, replenish my fly tying materials, see old friends, and be entertained at the seminars. My best purchases this year were packages of 100 tungsten beads for $12 and Pettijean's CDC feathers. I want to start using more CDC for mayfly wings but find the stuff I've bought in the past is too unruly and makes sloppy wings. I haven't tried it yet, but his stuff looks like it will do a better job.

Yah, drive 800 miles to fish for pellet pigs. That's the ticket

Well if thats not your thing so be it. I was responding to thrashers.wheat who implied with his post that such fish dont exist in warm Georgia. Not true I say. North Georgia has some gorgeous trout water. Small streams holding native brookies to larger streams holding some respectable fish. A trip down South starting in Virginia and working across North Carolina, tennessee and then dropping down into Georgia is just a great way to explore some unheralded flyfishing. So I say to River Fox enjoy the trip to Georgia and maybe next time take the drive and fish some other states along the way. You will not be disappointed.

Let me say this, I was being sarcastic for sure but someone has sold this fellow a bill of goods if he told him he is going to catch 10lb Browns. I have lived and fished N. GA since '61 so I am fairly certain I know what these water hold. Are the 10lb Browns yes but to catch them well the second coming of Christ will come before that. The Chattahoochee holds some as did the Toccoa. How do we know this, eletro shocking that's it. The Toccoa had a fairly good population of Browns until last year when the TVA drained Blue Ridge Lake and sent the water temps to 80*. There was a study just completed and about 90% of the fish, big, fish were killed. GA does not manage for Browns and the "Trophy" waters hold Bows very few Browns as the hatchery's don't raise many Browns.
You would have a better chance of catching a 10lb Brown on the Delaware.

So my point is why drive 800 miles to catch pellet pigs when you can fish the "Trophy" waters of PA or NY. If one wants to come South and fish for big Browns the places to go are the Watuga and S. Holsten both are managed for big Browns.

Soque River which is where I believe River Fox will be fishing has Brown 3 12lbs as well as Rainbows. Now in February which is when he is going he may have a good chance of catching a large fish..perhaps not 10lbs but honestly does it really matter...let me answer that for you..NO it doesnt. So he will likely have a good time while the rest of us freeze our asses off in the Northeast.
