Renzetti Traveler Display Model...

bigduhon

Fishizzle, I use worms but I'm looking to upgrade!
The wife sent me out to buy my own Christmas present yesterday. Not a bad deal at all...

I settled on a new vise...a Renzetti Traveler, my first nice vise. I wound up having to settle for a display model, as the store only had left-handed versions in an unopened state. I got the original box and everything, and it appears as thought the vise actually sat in a display case the overwhelming majority of the time.

Anybody have any issue with this? Is there anything with the vise that I should make sure is ok before my time to return expires?

Thanks for your help...I'm excited to finally have a non-kit vise!

The Traveler is a really nice vise; I have one too and Renzetti customer service is first rate IMHO.

About the only thing that can go wrong with them is the O-ring which can dry out eventually and the Nylon tension adjustment screw which also can wear out after a LONG time.

Renzetti sells a spare parts kit for the Traveler which has all of those parts in it which you could buy or do without until the time comes. If it's just O-rings that worry you; a hardware store should have a less expensive alternative if you need one in an emergency.

Enjoy your new Christmas present!

I have that same vise and love mine. I can't imagine that a "display" vise would get the abuse of, say, a display rod. It probably never had a single fly tied on it. Merry Christmas!

I tie # 22 up to 3/0 saltwater flies on mine without even bothering to adjust the jaws and have never had an issue with mine. Good tying :)

Thanks guys. I'm just trying to make myself feel better about getting something not completely "new." I guess it's the obsessive side of me taking over...

I'm really pumped for this new vise. I've been tying the overwhelming majority of the flies I've used for the past two years, and am hoping this makes doing so even more enjoyable.

Thanks again.

If this is your first rotary vise you'll love it; especially when working with chenille and winding other materials.

Good luck.......................................

I believe bigduhon doesn't see the train barreling down on him yet......

Don't forget to say so long to the wife and kids.....

Just have to remember you do have legal & moral obligations to continue to provide a roof over their heads, food on the table, and clothing on their backs......

Other than that.. enjoy your new vise... a VISE in more ways than one.

I've been tying flies on a Renzetti Traveller vise for a long time. I tie all kinds of flies with it, from midges to bass bugs, and it works as well today as the day I bought it. It is one of the few things that I ever purchased and was totally satisfyed with it. Good luck with your vise.

Congrats on your new vise. I would just make sure that the jaws are not chipped. Its probably in great shape. Now go have fun!

I have a Renzetti Traveler for probably 7 years now and love it. The only thing I had an issue with is the stupid little screw to tighten the jaws. I replaced it with the lever version which is much more practical (but addtl. $$ are totally worth it if you tie a lot).

Hey AKSkim, what's the balance?

Mine's the lever style and I agree that it is a better design than the screw. Also, I initially bought just the pedestal but later got the clamp for my tying bench. Now I use the pedestal for traveling.

Great deal!

I also purchased a Renzetti Traveler (lever model, pedastal) display model (from Ramsey Outdoors in Paramus) years go. I have tied a lot on it and the only thing I have replaced is the O ring. The vise performs well for me.

Happy tying!
Kurt

I got my traveler about 20 years ago, have replaced the o ring once, and replaced the jaws, withe the cam version in 2003. It will cover 99% of all the flies you will ever tie. Only extras I have purchased was the arm extension, for the clamp and the backgrop. I also have both a pedistal and clamp.
