KLG is pocket water at it's finest. Google Euronymphing and you'll understand what its about. Our very own AJfromnj is probably the guru for this. His DVD Aaron Jasper European Nymphing is the bible on it. I've seen it and I'm a convert. (Although unbaptized, I've yet to fish the KLG).

Long time reader (two weeks), first time poster. I am quite new to fly fishing in general and new to the area. I relocated from Seattle two weeks ago, bringing only super important items in my car…. clothes, xbox and fly rod.Last weekend I spent Friday and Monday evening at KLG, as I’m temporarily housed in Morristown. A few questions came up after watching you local-types kick my ass up and down the stretch.

1. The guys I watched closely (no, I wasn’t checking you out, sorry) were mostly fishing with very little movement in smaller pockets of water than I expected. It looked almost like cane pole fishing. No real casts, simply drop and drift or a small roll cast, over and over. I assume in this case that folks are fishing a nymph rig of sort. My tries to imitate were largely unsuccessful. Is there an east coast trick I’m missing? Depth? Action (or lack thereof on the fly)? I eventually confirmed I was getting deep enough by snagging some underwater rocks.


2. When have I over-attempted a pool, because a) I’ve spooked the fish or b) they just don’t care what food I’m serving? I believe I tend to overfish an area (Ok, I’m stubborn). However, I watched one dude pull five or six fish from one pool.

3. I believe I’m missing takes. Evidence: On Monday when the water was cloudy and burning through the gorge (Thanks rain, you asshole), I threw on an indicator and a mini wooly bugger. I had a few runs where I thought I’d snagged bottom, but after subsequent casts with nearly identical drift, didn’t catch a rock or a limb. So I’m relatively certain (or will tell myself so that I can sleep at night) that I missed the takes. Any tips for more hookups or on identifying the take? I read an interesting study that says nymphers miss 40% of hits because of how light the action is on a take. Put me in this category, I hope.

4. More of a gripe. After commenting how tough of fishing it was that day, another “fly fisherman” was using a spinning rod to yank out trout. His comment to me: “Yeah, I saw you catch one. It just looked hard today, so I wasn’t up for trying. I caught four.” Awesome.

Anyway, a little bit more background. Friday I was solely fishing a pheasant tail nymph (16 I think) and switched to a sulphur emerger toward dark, with no successful hookups. Monday I rolled with a woolie bugger (eff you cloudy water) then swapped to a hare’s ear (16 also I think), trailing a sulpher emerger. I managed aforementioned brookie and right before nightfall, broadsided a 20” sucker fish, which momentarily made me feel like a bad ass as it stripped line off my rod, jumped, and took about 5 minutes to land. I was going to post on these forums about how lucky I was, then saw it was a sucker fish, laughed, and decided to post anyway. It was still a really fun fight.

From a fellow Left Coaster, welcome to the hellhole that is NJ. Just kidding, it's not nearly as bad as you've heard. F the Gorge, better and far less crowded water upstream. As for missing strikes, add some sort of indicator. Anything from a bobber to a brightly colored section of line in your leader set up. What you are seeing is various forms of "high stick" nymphing, popular the world over these days. Some great tightline nymphers here on this site, in fact. Me? I'm a dry fly guy forced to nymph during the non-hatches, but I actually love streamer fishing (but let's keep that between the two of us, after all, I have a reputation to maintain). The KLG is famous due solely to the 'net. It is fine water to be certain, but there is another 20+ miles of river with ample wild and stocked fish just like the Gorge where you'll see few anglers and absolutely no dogs jumping into the hole you're fishing to fetch a stick.

Thanks to Rusty's and Port's recommendations, on Saturday I explored more of the S. Raritan outside of KLG. Over the course of the afternoon, I spent time on a few holes (probably too few) and marked a handful for later exploration. In one very fishy spot, I managed to miss what looked to be a very nice fish that spit the nymph - one of those where you see it roll sideways in the murk then cry a little when the line goes limp.
Just before dark, I moved locations and fished a deep pool with no success. I then saw about 40-50 feet upstream that there was a small batch of risers.

As it got darker the action got fast and furious to the point where the water was boiling every few seconds. I tied on a sulphur dry, missed at least three takes and had one fish hooked that jumped three times and then spit the hook. This was the first time I’ve had anything hooked on a dry fly, so I was thrilled even with the near misses.

So I hit the same spot Sunday….

I arrived just about two hours before dark, skipping the foreplay of the previous day. I did arrive early enough to fish the easy-access deep pocket while the fish were still being lazy bastards on the flat water.

A lady walks up with her dog and asks me if it’s ok if her dog gets a drink of water. She was super cordial and noted that “I don’t want to disturb your fishing”. I make future plans to marry her, and say that it’s not a problem.

The dog barely got in the water, I move slightly upstream, and am immediately rewarded by the karma gods with a respectable Brown. Note: I now welcome all dogs in my fishing holes and felt like a total pro. No numbers are obtained however.

Anyway, much closer to dark (vs. Saturday), I see the fish finally start to roll. The pace starts with a boil every few minutes. Then as the daylight recedes, the flat water builds its own rapids from all the rising fish. It felt like prom night.

However, this time there is very little interest in the sulphur (there were some in the air). I get a few half-ass looks, and one grab, but nothing like the night before. For a beginner, I had a handful of very cherry casts with drifts right over where the activity was and little to no splashdown of the line, but still nothing to show. It gets dark, I get cold, and walk off the field with a loss. (Ok, this was really like high school prom).

I’ve since read that the fish were likely keyed in on emergers, and hence the relative disinterest in my svelte fully-baked sulphur.

Any ideas, what hatch would be going off just before dark both Saturday and Sunday? I saw all sorts of different types of flies in the air those evenings, so wasn’t sure where to start or what to load up with for the next battle. Next time, I’m catching one or I’m dragging a net through the river.

They were likely feeding on sulphur emergers like you thought. Could have been Light Cahills as well. Based on the # of rises, I would doubt Isos as that bug seldom hatches in prolific #s on NJ waters. Good luck with the impending marriage

Yes, most of the water between downtown Califon and the Vernoy Bridge is public. Most. From Vernoy up to the River Styx Bridge is Shannon's private water. Then above that is some public mixed with private all the way to Budd Lake many miles upstream. If the neighbors don't want you to trespass, they'll have ample signage indicating such. I can think of at least one exception where the landowner on the far side of the river often posts no trespassing signs near the bridge that leads over to their house and it appears if you can't fish that water (which is public and stocked), but they just don't want people driving over their bridge and parking on their land. I always wave when they drive past and always get a return wave. But things like that are confusing at times.
