Penobscot River sees day 1 of Atlantic salmon recovery

Today TU and our many partners mark a milestone in restoring the greatly imperiled US stocks of native Atlantic salmon by removing the first of 3 dams to be removed or bypassed. This dam removal (2 dams) and bypass (1 dam) will open up a full 1,000 miles of Atlantic salmon spawning habitat and return both that fish as well as striped bass, shad, river herring and other species to the upper river system. With wild salmon stocks almost depleted in this major river, this project could not have waited much longer. Today begins the removal of the Great Works Dam, the first of the three targeted removal/bypass projects. Kudos to all that are involved in this historic restoration effort!

This is great news, protecting and restoring wild fish habitat is always good to hear.

I hope to see more people and organizations (like tu) take initatives to promote wild salmonid propagation by removing un-nessicary impoundments.

Maybe some day our state(s) will stop wasting money stocking inbred hatchery mutants. Then they could spend more on improving habitat and maybe enforcing more strict regulations regarding creeling fish...
