My 40th Birthday is coming in 2 weeks so after a bitter devorce, the death of my mom and loss of my house, I decided it was time to treat myself, So I shoped, casted, looked, etc. The Orvis,is what I'm going with,I marched into the store asked for a 5# 9' 4 peace,"thats $725" the man says,I boldly say "hey its on sale on the web site for $595","ok" he says we will honor that price. All good....I get home itching to try it out, hit the park get ready, feed out some line,do my back cast...hear a crisp snap....come over with my fore cast only to see the bottom section in my hand and the rest of the rod on the ground in a tangle of line. The freaking thing snaped like a twig...only me..I thought to my self, called the shop nearly in tears, they were very nice and told me to bring it back for refund or replacement.....REFUND!!!....:cold:

ratmatt ,

Life's a bitch . Sorry about Mom. Sorry about your rod however suppose your Ex got all you equipment too. You'd really be screwed, could you imagine standing on the bank holding cane pole in one hand and "who knows what in the other" during a spinnerfall hatch !!Then you'd really be screwed !!
My advice take a trip to Palm Beach. Hang around the Country Club go to a couple of singles dances, write and respond to a few personal ads. Attend the American Cancer Society Ball $ 500.(big time fundraiser w/ well moneyed chicks)
hook up w/ one that has an extra rod or two a beachouse and or 40 'Bertram w/help and a captain . take her fishing and move the **** on ...... We don't live forewver and neither do the fish. Post for the rest of the guys.TIGHTLINES

ps I've been there. trust me it's time to move on

Things will change, ... i promise.........i spent 18 years married, when my x came home to inform me she no longer loved me( actually she was in love with some one else) , that was a surprise, and starting over was tough, and some times it seemed an impossible task,. but i moved on.. and 2 years later i have met a wonderful person, know dont ask if i will ever marry again,.. cause the answer is "no" , i gave the system a chance and it failed me, i was not going to give it another , But some times i do look back ands say,.. I HAVE SEEN SO MANY CHANGES IN MY LIFE,.. thankfully the divorce was simple we both made good income's and had no children,.. i never did trust her ..Smile..
Actually i went fly fishing tonight and my girlfriend watched from shore in a chair and made funny faces while i fished and caught nothing .. life will move on for you...

One last bit of advice .consider a dating site, there are so many single,......... lonely people and .....they all have a story to tell.

Jeez.. Sorry to hear about all of that bad luck.

I have 2 zero G's. The only issue I have is that the ferrules come loose, but just before I read your thread, I put a little wax on them and they are tight as can be.

I've had a few T&T rods snap. Honestly, I think you just got a bumb rod. It happens. If you liked the rod that much, why not get a new one and give it a try.

If not, I recommend either a Loomis GLX or a Sage XP.

Hope your luck turns around soon.

Ok update time; went to orvis NYC. with snaped rod,THEY were more than

Ok, I just got home and read this and the suspense is already killing me. How the hell did you make this happen, or are you pulling our legs.

I know the street well, hope you called the press before you shut down the street, that would be newsworthy!

Now if you can get in on the Next Women and Waders Photo Shoot, you can send that picture in a frame to your Ex and have a real Happy Birthday!

Well then.... I guess I should start off by saying I am going to be married is Sept. I know a lot of people who got divorced including my parents and I hope they have all been cases of "its better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all". I have been with my fiancée for 8 years and if that time ever comes, I hope that’s how I feel about it.

<O:p</O:pFor Orvis, I love my pack, but everything else I've tried of theirs I don’t care for, especially their leaders. I've come to think of Orvis as just over priced fly fishing gear. No better or worse than the others. Bump rods happen, but at that price each rod should have been hand tested. My .02<O:p</O:p

I would be asking for the refund also! I can't understand how a company like Orvis stays in buisness, their quality is substandard and they charge an arm and a leg. I bought an Orvis multi tool/line clipper last year. I paid $42 for the thing and the lower cutting jaw snapped off while cutting through 4lb mono!

Suggestion on a new rod, try out the G-Loomis Stream Dance GLX, they run about $595. I have heard alot of good things from people who use them.

Drew just want to wish you good luck on the road ahead in marriage, but i had to smile when i saw you were juumping over the broom in Sept, that was my month of marriage 18 years ago,.. and i thought time together would make me feel more comfortable..............WRONG, one in three marriages lasts, when i look at the newspaper and see all the engagments anouncements i think,......... how many of these poor slobs will be still married in 10 years and how many will be paying child support to a woman who is slowly poisioning the childern against him while bilking him for child support,.. Good luck...

ther are probably more of us that can share horror stories about exes than youcould shake a rod at. I also broke a sage 7'-6" 3wt two weeks ago, one that I built about 15 yrs ago, contacted the co., and they told me to mail it in for repair. I'll have to wait and see what they offer for repair.

Got street closed by calling guys I work with, they brought up 2 trucks and some traffic cones, and " started looking for overheated power cables",reported in tha area....with reacent black out it worked like a charm....In fact the cop who was deverting people, laughed and said, theres no f---ing cables are there....Oh yes officer....

Just thought I would add my own note to this thread. I was in Belize and the guy I was fishing with had a brand new Zero-G 9 wt. The first day he destroyed the rod because the ferules where loose as noted by a previous post and it snapped and splintered.

I have used a Zero-G 5wt and I thought it was awesome but I have heard a ton of other people mention issues due to loose connections. I think the wax is a good idea in general though and would definitely solve that problem!

Why not try taping the ferules with electrical tape? That is what works for me with my spey rod.

IMHO wax can collect dirt and later lead to scratches on the male ends of the furels.

St. Croix also recommends you wax loose ferrules. The reason they get loose and slip is that the taper doesn't fit exactly right. So, coating the male side of the ferrule with wax helps seal the taper and results in a tighter fit.

Believe me, a perfectly matched - and I mean perfectly matched - taper will go together easily and will be very, very difficult if not impossible to get apart without tools.

Fly rods are not meant to have perfectly matched taper ferrules.

Casting or even test flexing a rod with a loose ferrule will can crack and/or break it. That probably why the rods in the store were cracked - people shopping for rods like to pick up a rod a whip it up & down to "test the action". With a loose ferrule this would certainly cause a crack, but the rod might not actually break until the rod is loaded with line on a normal cast.

Any execs. from Con Ed read this forum? My electric bill is too high...

When could anyone close down a street as alleged? What street was it on and at what time of day ?
I find it hard to believe they could get away with it

At the place your rod goes together you have natural flat spots. If you have to start adding electrical tape to hold your rod together you best be buying a one piece. I have about a dozen rods from a 3 wt to a 14-16 wt. Never once did I have to tape/glue/wax anything together.

I have heard of people using tape on a spey rod but a regular rod..... get one that stays together without added help. THere are plenty on the market.

Its a pretty sad situation when a $600 rod needs tape or wax to hold it together. Get a refund or sell it on ebay and get a rod of quality. It just is not worth the torture of looking at it and thinking "I paid over $600 for this piece of crap.

Hey there...I read your tale of woe and you need to know that you are not alone. I have been using Sage rods (fresh and salt) for more than 10 years and have been totally satisfied. But let's discuss the more important topic...getting back into circulation.

Following my divorce several years ago I decided to do something that I had wanted to try for a very long time. I love all kinds of music and gave ballroom dancing a try. Starting out at the true "I know nothing" point was kind of scary. But we forget that all dancers started at the same point. I found it to be an amazing experience and I have become an avid dancer. Besides the fact that I enjoy the music, I know enjoy the dancing immensely. Plus it is an increidble way to meet women in a very safe and non-threatening manner. I am talking about women of all ages, shapes, educations, etc. If you are inclined to give it a try you will find that there are many fine women out there who will enjoy your company.

Let me know if you want more amplification on this topic.

Stephen
