NJ Anglers Can Save $15

NJ is one of two states that didn't institute a saltwater fishing license that the Feds mandated, so beginning in 2011 NOAA will be requiring that anyone who fishes for migratory fish or in federal waters will have to pay NOAA $15 to register.

But, anglers who registered in 2010 have one year from their initial registration date to renew. The way I read that means if you register for free this month, you're good until Dec. 2011, saving $15 for next year.

The whole registering thing is a bunch of bullshit anyway. Just another way to reach into our pockets. They say they waht to keep better track of the fisheries by polling fishermen. Just like the HIP number for duck hunting. The results they get will not be very accurate.

Joe,

You forget the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as two other US Territories that didn't yet figure out the federal registry yet :bang:

Damn the RFA for blocking what is now a royal screw up for our state! Nobody wants a new license, but the feds mandated it and now NJ loses out on any revenues from it. Worse yet, if the Senate (state Senate) bill is approved on Thursday, then the Division is forced to pay out of the dedicated hunter and angler fund to pay for the registry. It's a bit more complicated than that, but that is the short story. Wake up out there folks, time for a salty license. No more free fishing.........ironic that the state Senator (Smith) that sponsored this bill has only ONE beach in his district that is free to walk on. So he wants free fishing, but you have to pay $$ just to walk on the beach to fish for free.

WTF???

Brian,

I didn't forget the territories, I just mentioned the states. And NJ is one of the states that loses out on the revenue that could have been dedicated to saltwater fisheries instead of it going to the fed and then who knows where. The other thing that possibly factors in is that I think under Dingell Johnson Act they way the excise tax money on fishing tackle gets divided up among the states is by the number of licenses sold. Like the HIP for migratory bird hunting, the numbers will only be as accurate as the people providing them.

Recreational anglers have long held that they contribute as much or more to the economy as the commercial fisherman. As I understand it, NOAA simply said prove it. They want to know how many people participate before changes are considered in the allocation of the resource. States that have had a saltwater license for a number of years were able to show the numbers and were succesful in getting some fisheries closed or restricted to commercial fishing.

I can confirm this....

I just printed out a new (temporary) registration card that expires on 12/04/2011, without giving any cc number, or being asked for any other form of payment.

I don't know if it means anything, but the registration number is different than the old one....

While I was typing this, I got a confirming e-mail, stating that a permanent registration card would be mailed within 30 days... again no indication that they want me to pay for it....

What's the penalty for not having a card and who's enforcing it? When I registered for last years card I did so because the in-laws have a house down the shore and I occasionally find myself fishing there. However I'm not species specific as I remember the registration requires..... This whole ideas seems like a cluster ****

As per NOAA: Penalties will vary, depending upon the circumstances of a specific situation. You may view the penalty schedule used by Law Enforcement personnel as guidance in assessing and seeking penalties for violation of the registration requirement at: NOAA Office of the General Counsel Home Page
