Newark fish?

I take the train to NYC most every day and pass over the Passaic River right in Newark. This morning the train stopped for a few moments over the Passaic River there and I saw several HUGE swirls on the surface, some very large fish feeding on something.

What could they be?

Most likely Carp, but possible that it could be catfish or maybe even striped bass or shad, but my money is on Carp..

i'd also bet on it being carp. i haven't lived in NJ long but this is the exact weekend every year that the carp are spawning up in NY. so being a bit more south and slightly hotter it could be the same or left overs of it.

it's usually beginning weekend of june but it can be pushed up or back by a weekend depending on weather. they need a couple hot sunny days before they kick it into high gear.

they are definitely fun to watch, or fish/snag/bow&arrow/spear for during this time. great fight but that's all they are good for :)

i was up in syracuse NY this past weekend. went down to the local swamp/bay that feeds into the big river. it was about 530 on my way to do some fly fishing up the road. stopped and looked over the bridge and saw about 50 carp in that one area. all headed up towards the feeder creek. they about to get their groove on. lots of swirls and rolling in the shallow waters. you will see them roll almost out of the water, backs up above, tails flipping all over along the banks and in the cat tails.

ps. their lips bleed. think its one of the few freshwater fish about these parts who have fleshy lips. makes getting that hook outta there a bit more difficult. if you ever fish for them, try good old wonderbread. they love that stuff.
