My new rod

New member
I just had the guys at DRO make me a new rod. Its a ST Croix 3 wt 2 pc 6`. nice and small for the wts I fish and for crappies and panfish in the creeks around me. I need a reel for it now. My 5 wt reel fits the seat but its way too heavy. A new one is like 120.00 and I just dont have it right now,so I was wondering if anybody wants to give me a deal on a used one. I dont care how used either,as long as its drag system is all good. No kmart specials,I got a few of them around. Somthing worthy of this 200.00 baby I want to put iton. Thanks

Meisslbach-Catucci

My favorite reel for light rods are the Bakelite Meisselbach-Catucci 370 or 372 reels made in the 1920's. They are very light and have a real sense of style. I usually find them for roughly $50 on EBay or fishing shows, but it's hard to get one in a short amount of time. Be careful - they crack when dropped and the green swirl knob can get tight.

OOOOOOOOOOOOO I was there about two weeks ago and he showed me that blank. Green right? That is the new blank they are using on the updated avids! Sweet. I have a reel that I think is really nice that i got on the cheap. It is an old prestige w/disc drag I got from cabelas for about 39.00! I use it on a 4wt I have dedicated to panfishing (my favorite target when not after smallies!). I bought it to have a cheap reel, but I hooked into a 2lb bass on it and the drag was flawless! Cableas, TFO and St. croix have definitely taught me that when t comes to fly fishing...... price doesn;t always correlate to performance.:applaudit

yeah, the green one. I had Bill put a lighter shade of green thread on it and went for the upgraded eyes and reel seat. The rod casts real sweet and man what action! I was ready for it to cast real bad but just the opposite,it was real smooth. I still need a reel, not happy with the weight of the one I have on it. Dave

I have a 6 foot, 3 weight St Croix Avid about 3 years old and it's a sweet rod - I imagine yours is an improvement over mine. I have a Loomis Adventure reel on mine which is probably a little overkill but a great reel. It sells for $100 but if you can find a used one for less I'd recommend it for your 3 weight.

I own one of those but in a #7 series..awesome reel. I just was hoping a member might have one used for sale. Did the ebay thing alot and I cant bring myself to start again because I spend too much! We`ll see where this thread goes. HELP... I need your used stuff:clown: :thankyou:

I have a little #3 Argus reel for my 2wt rod. Bought it cheap at the fly show, like $40 or something. Great reel for the small rod, smooth drag, easy on the wallet.

Dude, Ebay! if you're dead set on used. At least go shopping there to get an idea of what's out there. Search "fly reel -rod, -seat, -vintage, -antique" and it'll keep ya busy for a while.

I have an addiction to ebay so bad that I had to cancel a account because of it. I love to shop and if I open my ebay account again I wont be paying my bills this month. I had a store on ebay for over a year. Spent every penny I made on just STUFF. If noone has a used reel I will just buy a new one next week on payday. Thanks for the advice..

Sorry, I'm using all the ones I have - because I've sold or given away all the ones I didn't use.

My brother bought one of the Bass Pro Shops fly reels last year, and it was really pretty nice - I was impressed with the quality for the money - 100 bucks including a spare spool. Nice smooth drag, too.

My persoal favorite is the Teton Tioga, a #2 would be good with your new rod. I use them on my 2 & 3wts. You can get them at DRO, about $110 these days. It's a very nice reel, I have three Teton reels (2 #2's and a #4).

When I was looking for a reel for my 2-3 wts, I looked at (and wanted) the Tioga, nice reel, but chose the Galvan Standard for a few dollars more. It was a hair lighter, but the drag seemed much smoother at lighter settings.

Dave, I usually use a reel with a simple pawl check for anything up to 5 wt, so most of my reels are Hardys. I do use the reels with drags once in a while, but in our area with the size fish that you'll catch 90% of the time, with small streams, there's not much room for a fish to run to, so I feel that a drag is overkill. Still, there's some beautiful hardware out there, and being a reel junkie, I like to use them all once in a while. But there's nothing like the sound of a nice fish having it's way with a click drag!
