My highlight of 2011 Fly Tying Symposium

AKSkim

Boston - Title Town USA
Saturday at the 2011 Int. Fly Tying Symposium the five hours that I was there it seemed that four of them was either standing
or sitting around talking to friends. I only planned on attending just Saturday, but I really didn't get to see much of the show.

Sunday I headed there early to take a good look at the various style of tyers the show had to offer.

I made it to the last row and once I got a look at all the tyers I was going to head for the door.

I stopped at Wally Nowak's table to look at his salmon / steelhead flies.

He had a computer on the table that was rolling over photos when I caught a glimpse of someone sitting at a desk.

So I just asked the question if that desk in the photo was Roderick Haig-Brown's desk?

You just never know....

Wally looked up from the fly he was tying and for about the next 45 minutes I got into a conversation that was
without a doubt the best one I had in many years.

Started with Haig-Brown (Wally is from British Columbia) we talked about the Campbell River, then he brought up
about baseball (I had a Red Sox golf pull over on) in which he was very knowledgeable all in the span of a few minutes,
so I figured I would hurt his feelings before I took my leave.

This years STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS Boston Bruins beating that BC team....

That opened up the topic of the National Hockey League that Wally and I got into and tier Mike Martinek (seated in dark shirt) joined in on.

We talked hockey history from 1940's - 50's - 60's - 70's naming players, games, events that we experienced and the players we knew or met.
I cannot express how much I loved it... they were very knowledgeable, We all had Eddie Shack stories, Espo, The Great Bobby Orr, Wally knew Don Awrey personally.

Been a while but I could still name most of the Bruins roster before Orr, and the Stanley Cup teams.

Talking about one Montreal series and I brought up their goaltender from Cornell, and looked at Mike and said don't say it!!!!
But he did say that name.. Ken Dryden, just to hurt my feelings.

I truly hated to leave but I had to get going.

Meeting Wally and Mike was truly an enjoyable experience at this years show.

PS

Notice the name on the Carrie Stevens hooks?
