More furunculosis

"The 2014 spring trout stocking program has been significantly modified due to the impacts of a fish disease (furunculosis) at the Pequest Trout Hatchery. The Division has implemented a
plan to control the disease at the hatchery, but it is necessary to modify the trout stocking program this spring in order to conserve and protect our wild trout resources and other year round

I thought they fixed the problem?!

These brookies had previously tested positive and were medicated. But before being released this week, they showed positive tests and were euthanized per the protocols they put in place. Bottom line is the normal 570,000 trout normally stocked in a given year is down to around 300,000 and may not stay at that number.

So these are in addition to the 114,000 they killed before. I guess it is better to air on the side of caution, but I still don't know why and the 114,000 they killed were not just put in landlock No Trout water.

Correct, another 90K above and beyond the 114K. Many states think we are overreacting and would have stocked them anyway. I'm one that likes their very conservative approach to protect our wild trout resources. So off to the landfill. If anyone is doing the math, our normal 570,000 stocked trout are currently down to approx. 300,000 and that # could continue to drop depending on conditions.

I really don't think the averate NEFF angler trout fishing in NJ will notice a big difference this year in spite of this situation. Crowds are way down on the waters we typically fish and they are even seeing an uptick in license sales in southern and eastern areas where some of these fish are being stocked into non-trout waters, exposing new anglers to trout fishing which isn't a bad thing. In the meantime, plenty of wild, holdover and fresh stockers in most of the streams we fish.

Tough situation and until they clear and disinfect the runways and get rid of the infected stock the health of the trout at Pequest will remain uncertain. I also support the F&W's conservative approach to protect our wild trout. I have only been out once and did fine on a WTS and expect the hatches to start soon on the mid-size waters like the BFB, SBR, Musky, and Pohatcong. There will be trout to fish for but perhaps not just in the stocking points as they spread out.

One fact that more people have become aware of is the amount of wild trout water NJ actually has.

The Catch & Kill crews on the meat forums are screaming "it's a conspiracy"

I guess everything today is a massive cover up designed to rule your mind since we are all nothing but sheeple.:) You guys who need to laugh, do some surfing on the meat sites. And they are demanding a free trout stamp next year or a full refund this year....good luck with that.

I wonder what kind of gardening soil they would make?

By my conservative math, that's over 38 tons, yes I sad tons of dead fish (so far). I knew I should have showed up at the hatchery with my black plastic trash bags for tomato fertilizer.

They should have let the kill and keep crowd into the hatchery to fish the raceways before they destroyed the fish. Then they could have stopped their bitching.

"it's a conspiracy"

i surf the meat sites often. For me its like looking at B rated porn or some strange redneck bullsh*t.

You know what else is so stupid it makes me laugh... pro tournament bass guys.
You ever watch these idiots on TV land a bass and scream really loud....funny.

I have a real hardon for meat idiots on NJ TCA waters though. those guys take the prize.

I hear Christie was a bait fisherman and is quite upset. This could be a reason he has been losing weight as well.

and the state is stocking more rainbows, while doing so gives anglers the trout in the waters to fish for, what effects does stocking more rainbows have on the eco system of the river?

Generally speaking, it's better for our native brook trout. We have relatively few streams that see spawning rainbows compared to brookies or browns. The browns wreak the most havoc on our native brookies, so from that standpoint, more bows and no browns means better things for the natives. Other than that, there is no difference. Expect almost 100% bows next year as well into our trout maintenance (TM) waters. Too soon to say if our trout production (TP) waters will get stocked next spring or not. Some will push for the end of stocking on certain higher quality rivers if we can also get lower creel limits to better protect the wild trout (of any species).
