Mid January, Dry Fly.

BRK TRT

Small stream, wild trout flyfisher

A small stream in southern CT. This was a day in mid January before winter really set in. The day was partly sunny with some clouds mixing in. The air temp was high thirties and the stream was flowing nicely. The water clarity was so clear that it seemed to be absent.
I had started fishing a wet fly and took a strike as the fly was retrieved. The strike came in some rather thin riffles rather in the deeper pool below. I changed to a Picket Pin wet, but one that hackle and fished it like an emerger. Several casts and a brookie slashed the fly as it rode near the surface. I had a hookup and moments later the 2wt delivered to hand this beautiful brook trout.

I continued to fish the Pin and took a few more brookies. I then noticed those little black stone flies about.

I put on a dry fly, a Hemingway Caddis and worked the soft places along the stream. Soon a fish rose and missed. Several more did the same until I managed a hookup.

A wild brookie on a dry fly in January. Well after this outing reality took hold and a cold nasty winter took hold. But February did present an opportunity.
