Massachusetts Fall Fishing/ Millers and surrounding rivers

Good Evening Gents,

Was wondering how the fellow fly fishermen were making out fishing in Massachusetts? Finally was able to hit up the Millers as the temps subsided to a brisk (ha) 67 degrees. Was able to coax a few browns to the surface in Orange.

My "home" river, the Quinnie, is less than a trickle, and its ashame. I hope to god the fish migrated to some deeper holes to tough it out. THANKFULLY, 99% of the Quinnie recieves hardly any sun, which is a wonderful thing.

The Swift River is yo-yo-ing in water levels, however the fishing has been steady from the usual size 24 midges to the size 10 hopper. Going to focus on the Bondsville section in the upcoming weeks.

Another month and arguably the healithiest and largest landlock Salmon population in the world will begin to infiltrate the mouth of the Quinnie and make their treck up the Stillwater. Boy I hope we recieve rain by then, unless in the off months transformed and they can resort to their secondary breathing system, lungs.

Been a horrible summer in MASS for trout fishing. I concentrated on the cross eyed doormat most of the summer ...I am ready to hit the rivers again. Stocking should commence by the 27th of this month. :crap:

Take care guys! Pray for rain!

Hi I plan to try for landlocks this fall and was wondering what fly's you have luck with and do the fish make it up as far as the airport

if the rivers in massachusettes are like the rivers in connecticut, theres harly any water flowing.

connecticut has cancelled its fall stocking

better to fish for bass and sunnies

This is complete nonsense!!! This spring we were worried about houses getting flooded and now we are in the midst of arguably the biggest drought this century so far. If I could pick, it would definitely be rain, but mother nature is back at it again, destroying the MASS trout population. The Westfield is done for the fall, Swift is alright, Quinnie: well I'm sorry Simms, and all of the small streams are toast. The one viable option is the............ FARMY!!!!! Farmington looks decent to say the truth. Post up with any other places, we need some answers.... I'm looking forward to a hopefully good October.

Rivers are in poor shape, however the Millers is still hanging in there! Been able to get a few browns to come to the surface. Was out this past weekend. The Quinnie, well, yeah. There is no water even coming over the Dam. I have a few places I like to hit WAY where few ppl fish, with some DEEP holes and runs. But, I am going to leave it until the river increases its banks. Theyll be there. The native population is VERY strong in the Quinnie as well as Trout Brook. They will hunker down and wait for the skies to open.

Swift is fine. Lets face it. Swift is AWESOME if we compare it to the other rivers. I supposse if we do not get rain stocking WILL be canceled, if they haven't already. I will keep you guys posted.

As for the Salmon, anything big and BUSHY! Mudlers, Zoo cougars, Leeches and buggers! Swing 'em and strip em! Give it two more weeks and some big rain and it will be begin!!!

Went to the stillwater today to explore. Walked from the bridge up stream quite a ways past 190 caught alot of salmon parr and chubs. They seem to have no trouble surviving the low water. The water temp was 64. only saw a few trout but unable to get them to take a fly salmonparr.jpg

Looks like were getting a soaker here today and tomorrow. Spoke to central district and apparently PONDS are only getting fish this fall? What the heck?

I spoke with A gentleman this evenin who owns a fly shop, and he told me the Nissitissit,Squannacook, and millers rivers, just received fall stockings. And i should'nt have any difficulty. My home river is the Quinnie as well. Ive hooked into some very nice holdover browns, no natives though, I went there last night and only one fish rose to my fly. Any advice on patterns or whatnot?

*67,

That is great to hear!!! Looks like by Columbus Day the trout should be ready to take flies!!

Not sure which end of the Quinnie you fished recently, however the lower end up to I-190 overpass is CLOSED if you didn't know! It is wonderful as now the meat hunters need to walk to get to the river instead of chucking garden hackle out their windows!!! Sure has detered many. :) Stocking trucks STILL are able with MDC permission to go around barriers! :) Normall nymph patterns work grandly. Nothing to particular. Have landed some MASSIVE fish in that river. One day this fall or spring well hook up and fish. I like to pack a lunch and start from the reservoir and go down until I hit trout brook. Than the next day Ill fish from the confluence to the end where the dam is. A wonderful 3.5 mile stroll (well 7 if the GF doesn't pick me up at the end!) and there are plenty of fish. The confluence of the Quinnie and Trout Brook is what i call the "petting zoo"...MEat hunter galore, however they NEVER stray beyond that pool, which baffles me as the water 50 years down begins some f the nicest water on the RIVER!!!! but shhhh.

Perhaps a weekend/weekday after columbus day well take a run up to the millers and chuck some flies?

It's nice to get some good news about the Squannie, Nissitissit, and Millers. Man, if I had to pick one river which could handle a drought the best, it would either be the millers or the swift. When they stock the millers, I hope they stock it with just browns and a couple brookies mixed in. I really don't like the bows at this time of year because by next year, they'll have died of. Its a waste of money. Going up to the Adirondacks on Columbus day and hitting a couple of my favorite spots. One of my favorite things to do in the fall, probably my most favorite, is to go up and fly fish stillwaters for native brookies. They are spawning and you wouldn't believe there colors! It just goes to prove that, although I'd rather be fishing rivers, if I can't during the fall, than you can't say no to a couple of beautiful brookies in a lake or pond.

Pics when you come back brook!

I am headed over the petting zoo next weekend to hook into some chrome. Just need to take a ticket and wait in line!

went back to the stillwater today to see if i could tempt the few trout i saw last Wednesday and was in for a surprise when i caught this brookie

Nice fish! But next time try to keep him in some water when you snap a pic. You dont want his slim to be wiped off. its his protective coating...much like armour.

I will be hittin the stillwater heavy in the next 2 weeks or so. Landlocks baby!!!

If it was so damn important to keep a fish in the water for a pic, maybe you should have done the same when you struck your pose in your avatar, dildo.

I should have phrased it differently. My bad. The fish in my avatar is not laying on rocks nor is his slime coming off in anyway. When its layed upon rocks or abrasive surfaces the slime gets wiped off and the trout is prone to diseases.

Oh, TT, I was wondering. Is the reason you dont have a gold band around your finger because you act like a child? Or is it because your ring finger is abnormally small?

It was raining and everything was quite wet did not think it would do any harm to put the fish down for a second before release. Generally I get them to the net as fast as possible and release as quick as i can.
On another topic I was wondering if the browns spawn in the river as well as the landlocks.

p.s ignore the trolls

Jack

Jack,

I do not think so. But I could be wrong. I dont think the 'chu holds any population of reproducing browns.

On another note, if you wanted to hit the stillwater in the next few weeks, let me know. I am anxious to get out and hook into some landlocks!

starting tomorrow I have to work 12 hour days for the next couple of weeks including the week ends

Well, if you think a ring finger that wears a size 13 ring is small, it explains why you prefer having a thumb shoved up your ass. But, hey that's your business, dildo.

You seem to have a dildo fetish. Perhaps you are unable to please your wife? Did you ever think about doing standup? You're a funny guy.

I didn't even send you card....sorry....please offer my best wishes to the luck guy..... you are lucky to live in Mass. where you have a fag like Barney Frank fighting for your rights..... dildo.....

Correction: I do not live in Massachusetts, therefore I do not vote in Mass. I merely attend law school here.

And why would you send a card to me? I already know how lucky I am to have you.
