Welcome to the hands-on group of fly tyers! What a wonderful way to relax. :smokelots:
IMHO, Tying is between you and the fish. Experiment with what you think will work and fish, fish, fish.
I believe in the many tried and true patterns, but I can't help trying to improve them. LOL Believe me that provides me with hours of fun.
The most beneficial suggestion I received when I started tying was "Tie sparsely". Like most beginners I put too much of everything on each fly. That's even taking into consideration that I fish mostly Salt and Brackish waters!
Up here on the Kennebec River we use a fly called the Grocery Fly. It has too much of everything on it, shy of the kitchen sink, and the Stipers gobble them up. So I get to succumb to my weakness for too much material and still have an effective fly.
As for tools and materials, buy what you need, to do what you want to do. If it works the way you want, great. If it doesn't, look for something that will. You haven't reached a goal, you're just taking the first steps on a long and exciting journey. The caution is, it's likely to be addictive. You may not fish or tie for a long while but you will only be between episodes.
Finally this may be a stretch but, there may be a few fly tiers out there that might just have an opinion or two to share. LOL
