this kit seems like a good buy to start out with i mean if something has to be upgraded i can eventually do it... one other question i was looking at the cabelas fly fishing and they have a premium tying material kit seems good let me know what you guys think of the vise and the material kit

thanks john

Hey Troutfever,

i got the same vise for christmas this year. So far its been great... Ive tied a bunch of flies with it. I bought another bobbin. A ceramic one. But other than that they have all worked great.

As for the materials i bought all my materials based on what i wanted to tie. I thinkk that is the best way to do it. good luck

That will work for sure as you progress you may find a need for smaller jaws . As for materials some basic color dry fly hackle , dubbing to start and you are off to the races!:)

The Thompson wipe finish tool needs to be upgraded immediately. I have similar kit and once I replaced the wipe finish tool it was nothing but pleasure to tie my own flies. Good luck and enjoy it.

Welcome to the hands-on group of fly tyers! What a wonderful way to relax. :smokelots:

IMHO, Tying is between you and the fish. Experiment with what you think will work and fish, fish, fish.

I believe in the many tried and true patterns, but I can't help trying to improve them. LOL Believe me that provides me with hours of fun.

The most beneficial suggestion I received when I started tying was "Tie sparsely". Like most beginners I put too much of everything on each fly. That's even taking into consideration that I fish mostly Salt and Brackish waters!

Up here on the Kennebec River we use a fly called the Grocery Fly. It has too much of everything on it, shy of the kitchen sink, and the Stipers gobble them up. So I get to succumb to my weakness for too much material and still have an effective fly.

As for tools and materials, buy what you need, to do what you want to do. If it works the way you want, great. If it doesn't, look for something that will. You haven't reached a goal, you're just taking the first steps on a long and exciting journey. The caution is, it's likely to be addictive. You may not fish or tie for a long while but you will only be between episodes.

Finally this may be a stretch but, there may be a few fly tiers out there that might just have an opinion or two to share. LOL
