Italian bamboo

Ok, so at the fly show I do my fair share of casting bamboo.

I cast rods from R.K. Bolt this year, and also Jim Downes.

I liked both those guys a lot.

Jim offers a course in building bamboo that I want to take this summer.

So you know I did try the rod of the Italian rod maker. The guy who makes the fancy rods with the bamboo ferrules.

I'm not really interested in fancy ornamented bamboo rods, but I had a sense that these builder guys wanted me to cast their rods.

So I tried a few of these rods with the bamboo ferrules...

These rods perform like one piece rods...

Only the finest casters are allowed to cast them.

And so I waited my turn by the casting pool, with Cabarle and BHC following to see my skill on display.

Cabarle and BHC took cover while I cast...

With line speeds of 200 mph, the tippet alone can take out an eye.

Since the rods were recently dipped, the maker told me "no hero casts."

i thought this meant not to cast more than 120 feet or so.

So when I was launching my bombs, I could tell the maker was visibly upset.

When he saw Cabarle and Landheer take cover, he wanted his rod back.

A deep flex in the rod could mess up the finish.

So while the crowd loved what they were seeing from me at the casting pool, when I went back for more casting on Sunday the Italian maker wouldn't let me cast his rods.

Go figure.

They were undeniably beautiful.

And wonderful casting machines.

Perhaps I will buy one next year...

I cast his 7ft 9 inch model. I paired it with a really nice willow creek reel. I like the reel but I prefer 2 piece bambo rods.

They are two piece you king of the boobs. But they cast like one piece. Admit it. the rod was way out of your league.

Did you have your wrist cam on?

Two handed type of caster :)....

The 7ft 9 inch model was 3 pieces. Since you did not attend the show perhaps you shouldn't comment. It only exposes your boobery.....again

Beetle, I was there watching the long graceful casts you were making. I knew as you were leaving the hero casting pool that you would contact the Italian maker and order one. The snicker on your face told it all.

You need to check your glasses

Not only is Massimo Tirocchi a really nice guy, he's an excellent rod builder. I cast his 7'9" 5wt and was amazed at the speed this rod had. No problem putting a deep load into the rod and sailing a ton of line across the parking lot. I'm not a bamboo guy and except for a Leonard 30+ years ago, my bamboo rods have been on the low budget, hate casting them line. Massimo's rod I could definitely fish and love casting it. Like I said, I'm not a bamboo guy so I really don't know about the bamboo ferules. I'd be concerned about their durability, but then again, it may be an unfounded worry.

Massimo also guides in Italy and on my next visit I plan on spending two or three days with him.

especially for steelhead, really, what wankers. :)

I know it!

I strictly use the most technologically advanced piece of plastic I can find. Bamboo is for old farts who smoke cigars, drink single malt scotch, and row wooden dories
