Ok, so at the fly show I do my fair share of casting bamboo.
I cast rods from R.K. Bolt this year, and also Jim Downes.
I liked both those guys a lot.
Jim offers a course in building bamboo that I want to take this summer.
So you know I did try the rod of the Italian rod maker. The guy who makes the fancy rods with the bamboo ferrules.
I'm not really interested in fancy ornamented bamboo rods, but I had a sense that these builder guys wanted me to cast their rods.
So I tried a few of these rods with the bamboo ferrules...
These rods perform like one piece rods...
Only the finest casters are allowed to cast them.
And so I waited my turn by the casting pool, with Cabarle and BHC following to see my skill on display.
Cabarle and BHC took cover while I cast...
With line speeds of 200 mph, the tippet alone can take out an eye.
Since the rods were recently dipped, the maker told me "no hero casts."
i thought this meant not to cast more than 120 feet or so.
So when I was launching my bombs, I could tell the maker was visibly upset.
When he saw Cabarle and Landheer take cover, he wanted his rod back.
A deep flex in the rod could mess up the finish.
So while the crowd loved what they were seeing from me at the casting pool, when I went back for more casting on Sunday the Italian maker wouldn't let me cast his rods.
Go figure.
They were undeniably beautiful.
And wonderful casting machines.
Perhaps I will buy one next year...
