Guide recommendation for S/R

I'm planning a trip home for Xmas and wanted to get a trip in on the Salmon River. Never fished it before and did some research on guides, but only got so far. I got some good notes on Loren Williams and Greg Liu, but nothing too in depth. Any suggestions? I thought you guys first before I went to those NYers.

I had trip with Loren. He is the best.....

Appreciate the input guys. Not positive yet if I want to float or wade yet. I plan on fishing it for a few days w/o a guide after, and won't have my boat with me, so it might be a good idea to get a wade trip in.

if you're experienced fly fisherman, you probably don't even need a guide up there especially when the fishing is decent.

I went out with Scott from Tinker Tavern http://www.tinkertavernlodge.com in October for full day on a boat. It was my first trip to SR and at first I didn’t think I’ll need a guide after fishing there for a day. After the guided trip I felt a lot more educated about the river and the fish in that river.<o></o>
I would recommend going on a boat and exploring the river.<o></o>

imo, might as well book a boat trip just for that reason. you can cover more ground. take note of areas that would/might be good to wade fish later and be sure to get the guide's input on how to fish them. use the guide to learn the river, holes, drifts and technique and then go back and put a hurtin on them. good luck!

I strongly disagree. The guy said he never fished The SR, and he's going in late December. Depending on water flow and air temps different tactics are used to catch Steelhead than for instance the flies, tippets, and weight than we would use now, as the air temps are mild and the flow is down. I know well known guides who are some of the best FF in the business who hire guides when they make a long trip to a river they've never fished before. If you don't get to a spot where you can get a good drift into a holding lie chances are strong you'll go fishless. It's well worth it to hire a guide, at least for a day or two just to show you the spots and what time you have to get to those spots along with the other vital info you'll need to get into fish.

Just like to add... SNOW.

Lots of snow and getting to some areas maybe very difficult.

Exactly AK...I am a guide out in the paradise Valley Montana, and know that it is very much worth the money to fish for a day with somebody that knows the ropes so that you have a base of knowledge from then on.

If you haven't already made a decision Greg Liu is the man, he's the hardest working guide out there. I've been friends with him for the past 5-6 years, and if there are fish in the river he'll find them for you.

My money is on Adrian LaSorte for a trip on the Salmon. He tries so hard to get you into fish. Float or wade. One of the few true full time guides. He can take you on a trip on the Salmon now, a florida flats trip in the winter and then a float down the Delaware in the Spring!!!

Adrian may already be in Florida, I am not sure, give him a call!!

A float does get you to more locations for later reference. Some of my friends have had some great steelhead trips with him this year.

Water is low right now. Don't think it will come up too much before Christmas unless we get a lot of rain. But, a float trip is still an option. Float trip might cost you as much as a wade trip. SO might as well see the most of the river as you can.
