I have been fly fishing for a few years now, and I am really looking to begin tying my own flies. I have attempted to do this in the past, with humbling results. The dubbing is what really kills me.

Does anybody know of a class or seminar or anything like that in the nyc area? If anybody would like to share some advice that is certainly welcome as well. thanks guys.

If you can wait a few months, the East Jersey chapter of TU offers a fantastic fly tying course. I don't remember exactly when, but you can check out their website for more info. TU typically just covers their own costs if they charge at all so going this way is a great way to go. Local shops also offer tying lessons and fees vary, but there are shops in your area that can help.

Rambler -

I coordinate the classes for EJTU in Paramus. They are held in Paramus, just off of route 17 at the Westbrook Middle School.

The classes are taught by our chapter but are part of the Paramus Community School. They charge $70 for the 10 week course. The classes are Tuesday evenings from 7-10 PM.

For beginners, we collect a $20 materials fee at the first class. This covers a course syllabus and all the materials needed so you do not need to buy anything. We also have vices and tools available, which you can take home to practice with, by leaving a $100 security deposit.

I believe the date for the first class of the fall semester is October 6th. As Rusty Spinner said, you can confirm this on our website: www.eastjerseytu.org.

If you have any questions, PM me.

I learned to tie at Streams of Dreams in Saddle River, NJ (201-934-1138)and within 6 months I had flies published with Paul Schmookler on his website www.rareandunusual.com and some of his books and a few magazines. Now, I can't promise that will happen to you but the owners are pros who can talk the talk yet walk the walk. They fish in upwards of 180 days a year so you are not gaining your advice from a "shut in" that only ties flies. In addition to teaching you to tie flies that fish want, they can teach you how to cast them 100 feet as well:)
