Hancock, NY (WBNG Binghamton) New York State Police are investigating a Tuesday morning crash that left one person dead inside a vehicle submerged in the Delaware River.

Troopers responded to a Delaware County 911 report of a vehicle in the river near Harvard Road in the town of Hancock at 5:38 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Responding Troopers located a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a New Jersey registration approximately 50 feet into the river and half submerged in the water. The Jeep was heavily damaged.

The driver, Stephen J. Maikisch III, 37, of Somerset, NJ, was found deceased inside the vehicle, state police said.

Investigators said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it exited State Route 17 westbound at Exit 90. Maikisch's vehicle drove through a t-intersection at the end of the ramp and crossed Harvard Road, striking a guide rail and several trees.

The Jeep traveled about 200 feet from the road before it landing upright in the river, according to state police.

Delaware County Coroner Dr. Richard J. Ucci said a urine toxicology screening would be conducted. Results are currently pending.

Members of the New York State Police, Troop C, Scuba Team and Collision Reconstruction Unit assisted at the scene.

The investigation is continuing. Action News will update this story as more details become available.
