Bass Fishing

tkhour

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
Thinking about taking my new pontoon boat out in Mahwah on Sat to try my luck in some small lakes that I know. I'm new to flyfishing for Bass and it should be an experience. Anyway, my question is does anyone else know of some good lakes locally that are decent for Largemouths?. The small lakes I fish are the two right behind the Ramapo river in Mahwah, they usually have some fish in it but always looking to explore new territory. Thanks for the info ahead of time.

Are one of the places you're talking about the Scarlet Oak Pond at the Ramapo Reservation? I didn't think you could take a boat on there. Nice bass in there though. Shepherd's Lake in Ringwood has LM bass, Pickerel and stocks Trout. Saturday might be busy there.

The other place I could tell you is a 20 min hike up and down a few bike trails so no boats....really small ponds but loaded with sunnies, bass, pickerel and a few crappie.

Budd Lake

Hey TK,

I don't know if you're interested or even willing to venture but I have heard fairly decent reports about Budd Lake. There are also some Big PIKE in there. And yes ,they have a boat launch. I would also try Little Swartswood Lake in Sussex Co.

thanks

Upyun- I wasn't referring to that lake. I know which one you are talking about. The two lakes are closer to the baseball fields at Ramapo college. They are actually a little north of the fields behind the Ramapo river. They dont have a name because they are probably too small.

I appreciate both you and TFO's feedback. I will certainly at some point check those places out. Good Fishing:beer:

Just about any lake or pond in this area has LM Bass in abundance.

You won't be able to use watercraft, but you could also try the relatively new park ponds along Skyline Drive.... Lake Tamarack and Lake Todd. Also Lake Vreeland (Camp Glen Gray), let the ranger at the entrance know what you're doing. Brushy shoreline will make flycasting difficult.

You can use your Pontoon Boat in Potash Lake in Oakland (Off West Oakland Ave). There's also the Pompton Lake where Pike are a possibility.

I had recommended some smaller bassin' water not too long ago. May I suggest you do some searching for "bass" and you will surely find it.

If my memory is correct I was chastised for mentioning publically listed, public access water.

So in an effort not to re-ruffle any feathers, I will suggest you do some searching instead...

May I also suggest you stay AWAY from Round Valley Reservoir, especially if there is the slightest chance of bad weather. At the very least be very, very careful. It is a high elevation lake, the wind can come up fast, and it can get very dangerous very quickly.

hey TK, did you ever end up trying out those ponds next to the Ramapo?

ramapo ponds

Upyun,
No I havent fished those ponds yet this year but plan on hitting them real soon. Have you been back there? They definitley hold some nice bass, pickerel, crappie and bluegill

No, I have not been back there, but after you told me, I used Google Earth (I love that thing!) to see where they were so I'll DEFINITELY check it out this season.
