Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

The Vise Squad - Fly Tyers Group

D'ANGLER

Born to fish....forced to work!
Well I finally had the chance to tie my first flies this past weekend @ the show. Thanks to George at The FFF (Federation of fly Fishers) for taking the time to introduce me to tying a wooly bugger. I spent quite a bit of time with this nice old gentleman practicing the techniques of fly tying. His eyes & hands were not what they used to be be he sure did enjoy teaching. I proudly presented my new creation to Aaron Jasper & he kindly offered me to tie another fly @ his booth with Tom. They invited me to sit at a vice & Tom proceeded to instruct me on tying a beaded nymph - thanks guys! Well it seems like the fly fishing evolution has finally caught up with me. I spent the rest of the week watching You-Tube videos on tying different patterns. With my short bit of instruction it all made sense now. I'm now in the processes of putting together a tying bench at home.

This got me to thinking about starting a Meet-up group for fly tying. While I am a novice, I felt that there is so many people out there looking to share knowledge & have a good time - especially drink beer. This was ultimately true of the Steelhead Bash held earlier back in November. If anybody on this site is looking to join up this group (The Vise Squad) that meets monthly for casual tying nights, shows, lectures, fishing trips, food & drink then please check it out at http://www.meetup.com/Vise-Squad/ This project is still in it's infancy & trying to work out the logistics, so feel free to join up to be one of the "Founding Member's". I already have the first meet-up scheduled for Feb 26 - The Sparse Grey Matter fly tying event in Califon. We can all go out for a quick drink afterwards. > Thanks, Christopher!

Nice post, glad to hear you are getting into tying.

Tom has attended many RRTU FTN's and ALWAYS willing to provide first time tyers with instructions along with everyone else.

Dette's and Shannon's event last February was outstanding and a lot of fun if your came to watch the tyers or were there tying.
