Had a pleasant conversation with HLR this past week about patterns.

Started using snowshoe rabbit for the wing of a LaFontaine Emergent Sparkle Pupa instead of deer hair.

Will experiment with goose biot instead of Chewee Skin for the body segmentation this week as an alternate but this material has been excellent on the Main Stem.

Have a great Super Bowl.

Still cold up here but very little snowpack. Less than 2 inches.

Warming trend later this week.

Tight lines!

Ive tied quite a few e.s.p.s with snowshoe for the wing, I think it is superior due to the snowshoes qualities. I recommend that you match the colors of the wings as some trout will be very picky. Also it has been my experience with the e.s.p. that the under body does not matter. The fly is effective do to the antron cloak trapping air bubbles making the under body insignificant. I have tied them with just about any material and they work the same, I have also just tied them with no under body other than the thread wraps that bind down the antron cloak, and they worked great. But with both of the e.s.p.s presentation makes the world of difference. :)

Thanks for the reply Johnny.

I agree with your remarks about the underbody. In fact, I tied a few with some green caddis floss with no dubbing which I can't wait to try since the coloration through the Z-Lon looks great.

I've been using a sparse Z-Lon for the bubble from Matthews and not Antron.

IMO, sparse is critical to catch a lot of air bubbles when you check the bug in the clear glass filled with water since that is what the fish see. Sometimes tyers overdo with the Antron or the Z-Lon and what I want is the body to be submerged with the bubble but the wing to rid flush which is what the snowshoe rabbit does.

Here is a photo of nice example from a Norwegian tyer from Norway:

If youre looking for max air bubbles, give some of the float powders ago. They are excellent for trapping air bubbles 👍. Also I have found by doing the under water tests that Antron does not trap bubbles any more once saturated. So I always will use the powders with the e.s.p. or d.s.p. and they always work great.
Give one a try with pearl or opal tinsel underbody a try.

Here is a version of the Snowshoe ESP with just green floss for the underbody.
