Prices on NY license

Thats crummy, to say the least....I was pleasantly surprised this year to find that the cost of an out of state license, was not much more than my NJ resident license.....

Holy Shit! $40.00 to $70.00 for a non-resident? That's a huge increase! :crap:

No kidding.....I'll still buy one though...especially after discovering some of the NYS waters that are close to home.......that is gonna be a hard pill to swallow though

While 70 for a non-res is not completely outrageous (though not cheap either) when comparing neighboring states, the fact that it constitutes a 75% jump in 1 year is a real shame. If nothing else, they should have at least spaced it out for a few years. IMO, they needed to bring fees up, and 30 for a res is plenty reasonable, but non res should have ended up somewhere around 55.

They didnt add a trout stamp, but they did add a marine license. Thankfully they stopped it at the Tappan Zee on the hudson...thought i was gonna have to buy one to fish up in Albany.

Don't tell anyone, but I'd pay $200 if that what it cost. IMO NY is the best fishing state east of the Mississippi.

On that note...I'm heading to the Beaverkill.

Still cheaper than one tee time at most courses but wtf?

I have so far forgone a resident NJ license this year in favor of NY but next year may have be different. I know you can get a life time resident licenses. I wonder if there is a life time non-resident option.

I also wish they would switch to calendar years.

I don't know why any of you are crying over the increase. I still get my license for free. :)

Haha. Sorry. It does suck for you guys that have to pay that increase. Better make it worth the increase and go fishing more.

PA did about the same thing a couple of years ago, but what are you gonna do.
One thing though, I'd rather pay the increase than get caught fishing without one.

A FINE, now that would be an increase:down:

Two day trip to the Salmon River.

Gas to the SR and back home - $95.00
One night at the 1880 House B&B - $50.00
Breakfast and Dinner for 2 days - $40.00
2 day access to the DSR - $60.00
Fishing Gear an other stuff I don't really need - $100.00
Total cost for trip - $345.00
21 Trips for 2008 - Grand Total for Season - $7245.00

The license cost is a drop on the bucket. Don't focus on the cost, focus on the experiences and memories.

CT, Go catch a Scammie and post the pic. I need some SR porn.

I will continue purchasing a fishing license despite the increase, however, this money that will be generated by the increases should go back into improving habitat for fishing. It's just I'm beginning to wonder weather NY State is on a "fishing trip" looking to generate money for their "general fund". The increase in license fees affected the hunters as well, so we are talking quite a bit of capital. If the monies do go back into improving things in the hunting and fishing area, that's fine. It's worth it.

Mark,

I'm sure Gov. Paterson's sole purpose for the increase is to improve our fisheries. I'm disapointed to hear that you think he might use the money for another agenda.

I know there's been talk near our place in the Adirondacks about closing the local hatchery (Warren). Always thought it was state owned, but I could be wrong. Their fishery has been pretty wierd the last few seasons to say the least so I would hope an increase would change things for the better. I might have to start making supper outta these f#ckers and save my dinner money!! Thats a buttload of revenue. This sport gets yuppier and yuppier. Just hope the money is spent on land, water, and fish.

I agree with Soft-Hackle 100%. When the price goes up 75% in one year it's nothing more than a knee jerk reaction to filling a budget deficit and not to improving the fishery.

If I knew the money would be spent on purchasing land rights, keeping Beaverkill campground open, upgrading hatcheries, etc. I would not have a issue with the increase at all. Nonetheless, I will purchase a license and continue to fish in NY.

Peace!

Liberals are turning this country into another Communist Block.

Next thing they will be talking is taking over car companies, gas stations, free medical care, adding another 17 federal holidays...

When will it all stop...???

All sporting license fees in NYS are supposed to go to the conservation fund (http://www.dec.ny.gov/about/566.html) and its mission to provide "care, management, protection and enlargement of the fish and game resources of the State and for the promotion of public fishing, hunting and trapping."ffi

It would be naive to think Albany couldn’t find some way to siphon some of the increase into the general fund, but hopefully it does go to sporting and conservation projects.<O:p

The warren co. hatchery in Warrensburg is county owned and run; I should think they get some funding from the state, as well as purchases of fish for stocking purposes, but I would be speculating. There has been talk of potentially rolling it into a state run facility, but that's just rumors at this point. Apparently, the hatchery is off the budget-cut radar for now (http://www.poststar.com/blogs/?p=26051&cat=132).<O:p

$dog, just give me 7k and i'll squeeze out 30 or so trips, and photoshop you into any hero shots. If you send my your gear (COD is ok) i'll make sure it gets in the pic too. Just looking to save you a few bucks. I promise you wont be disappointed. I'll even throw on a few summer cruises for kings on my buddy's boat for free.

I am also wondering how it WILL affect license sales. I'm a NY State hunter education instructor, and I noticed a large drop in the class enrollments the last time license fees were raised. Another thing I don't like is, those hunters/fishermen over sixty-five and below 70, who have been getting their license at a reduced rate, will now have to pay full price once more till they break the 70 mark. A lousy change.

The closest river in NY that I was planning to fish this Summer has not yet recovered from some environmental problems. The Catskills for me would be an overnight trip since I no longer want to drive home 2+ hours at night while tired. With the increase in price, I may plan a September couple of days in the Catskills and buy the 7 day license for $35. When my target river recovers its trout population (or I discover another favorite closer to home), I will pay the $70 even though I do not know if the extra $30 is going to support the fisheries in NYS (there is no choice).

All things considered, if you have the opportunity to make decent use (5+ outings) of any of the out-of-state licenses in the NJ/NY/PA area, they are still bargains.

Yeah, thats pretty much unconscionable, especially when combined with the increases.

Ed, you're the best (as I weep at my computer:bawling: ).

Where would I be without you (feeling humbled :worthy:) and the rest here at NEFF?

I owe you one. :drunk:

Pat,

Buy the license...I'll drive...you can sleep all the way home.

They are talking about closing our county hatchery as well. Carpenters Brook stocks the good majority of the creeks in Onondaga County. Thanks to such lousy politicians who will vote for their own pay increase, but close a money maker for the local economy.
