Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

I had to go to Maine to do it, but I landed and released my first trout, and it was just shy of my goal to catch one before I'd been fly fishing for a year.

Anyways, any knowledge I have is due to most of the stupid questions I've asked that have been answer here, and some solid luck! So, thanks for the community, and I look forward to another year of asking stupid questions.

That first year for me was difficult as well..almost overwhelming the amount of knowledge you thought you had to know...then one day it just clicks - all the things you've been reading about finally start making sense - and then the oddity is no longer catching a fish, but days when you catch no fish at all.

I am by no means a good fly fisherman..but I've been blindly finding the acorn (wasn't setting myself up for that one) pretty consistenly - so if you ever wanna get out and wet a line I'd be more than happy to offer some pointers (mainly about untangling knots, secrets of dislodging nymphs from submerged structure, and techniques for removing flies from branches well out of reach)

congrats on the first trout!!

Were you folks using hook-less flies when fishing for the first year?

Hahaha I wont lie - one evening I checked my fly to make sure it had a hook (I was buying flies at that time) because I was having fish rise for it and I missed probably 6 times in a row..

Personally, I had very little coaching, so it was more trial and error for me. When you go with someone who knows what they are doing they can correct/teach you things so much faster than you'd learn them figuring out on your own - hence why I offered to fish with mtthwnvk. In the above scenario, if one of you guys had been with me that evening you would have told me to not set the hook so quickly and it would have resulted in more hookups... You were fortunate to have a father who fly fished who could teach you, maybe even some friends too - My pops doesn't even fish at all let alone fly fish. And noone I hang out with fly fishes..

I agree....100%..I was fortunate to have a friend show me the ropes with a fly rod...In my childhood I was taught that a fly rod is for bait fishing......I also learned a lot on my own, but having the security blanket for a couple early trips was nice.....
But for real? A whole year?!?!?!?!:) Well, just so you are aware, it ain't all downhill from here...that is the fun part!!!

Simms was born with a silver fly in his mouth....and beads in his ass;)

But for real? A whole year?!?!?!?!:)

In my defense, I never really fished at all before this, even spin casting. But, I digress, I'm sure my skill level is even less than I think it is.

Either way, I love being out on the water and getting to catch something that wasn't a small mouth or a chub was really rad. Was told it was a wild brown so I felt a little extra fancy about that. Looking forward to continued learning over the years!

You always remember catching that first trout on a fly rod.. You'll find that your going to be chasing that dragon for the rest of your life.

I remember catching my first one on a fly rod and I didn't catch another one the WHOLE season after that!! Haha

But I stuck with it and ripped lips the next year. Next step for you is getting a fat chromer on the fly.

HAHAAHAHAHAA!

Christ, I mean, they could have at least put on a German dry fly .
