Drf-flows-access and thermographs

JOE.T

Dry Flies Only
Under the three year experimental plan there should be a minimum RELEASE on the West Branch of 160 cfs and a minimum FLOW at Eddy of 225 cfs for summertime flows which begins June 1st.As some of you have seen Nyc has not lived up to there end of the deal this past weekend.

This plan was put into affect last year and will last for a total of three years. In the meantime we at the DRF along with TU,the Nature conservancy and other organizations are working on a long term permanant plan to ultimatley create sustainable flows which will preserve the tailwater fisheries as well as enhance them.

Various studies are being done by both sides to determine how much water can we actually use? as well as check temperatures in various sections of all the tailwaters to see how flows do affect the temps.

The oasis model is being used by both sides to do the studies.

The DRF has placed 10 thermographs in the branches of the Delaware as well as the main stem in various places such as the junction pool where the east and west meet and the juction pool where the beaverkill and east branch meet.

This data is colleted at an interval of 15 minutes for 3 months and than plugged into a computer to study the data.Although the USGS has guages to study temps ,we feel these are at "critical points" withhin the system that needs to be looked at.

This past weekend someone on the board explained to us that back in 1997 when the Cannonsville was at very low levels they had released more water from the east branch to meet the montaque flow. While this was happening it was realized that by doing so the water coming into the mainstem at the junction pool was under 60 degrees and the main stem stayed cool for miles down stream. This only occurred for a few days.He did not recall any of the data such as flow rates however a report from the DEC on flows and temperatures was published for the years 1995 -1997 showing this data.I am in the process of getting this report.

My debate was how did the east cool down the Bkill? He said the the volume of water being released versus the low flows on the bkill at that time of the year was enough to cool the river down to the main stem?

Since we now have the thermographs insatlled we are TRYING to get them to release water at a higher rate on the east branch even if its only for a few days to collect what we think is vital data.

Stay tuned.I will update on new info available.

Access-there has been some questions with regards to the stockport access on the main stem. This is what is happening at the moment.

The case has been in court now for almost 4 years which was started by the previous owner(before JOE).This gentlemen apparantley had very strong evidence documenting that the road now there is not owned by the state at all.

His case basically states that the road was originally built in the late 1800's by the state for access to a fort on the main stem. This was the case until the state came along and built rt 191 and the bridge in hancock. When this was done the state destroyed the road.Years later a land owner than put in his own access to the river( in a toatlly different location on the property) and shows by documentation he owned the road not the state. The state over the years has mantained this road and claims it is theres.obviouly its not a cut and dry case since its been in court for some time.

At this point its up to a Judge to make his decision. The Buzz is that the Land owner will win? Please dont shoot the Messenger!
Nobody is happy with this but such is life.

THE drf in the mean time is in the talking and research stage of aquiring two peices of property on the west branch BY DONATION.

If this comes to pass we will than do the neeeded work to make them public fishing access points.:D

HOPES THIS ANSWERS SOME QUESTIONS.

Joe... thanks for the update. In terms of Stockport... my prediction if it's closed will be an over crowded boat ramp at Buckingham. I really hope the buzz is wrong.

I don't think Buckingham will be worse than Shehawken if Stockport is closed.

What a shame.

Joe, thanks for the update and everything you're doing to help protect and enhance this resource.

Are you havin' fun yet? :D
