Sept can have some low water in the river. But otherwise it's very nice, with much fewer anglers per mile and still very hungry fish. :) Ausable with low fall water The lakes fish very nicely in Sept, too.

Yes, that is very true. Same thing applies to a lot of other fish species, too. Set the hook against the way the fish is pointed, if you can. Your hook-up rate will skyrocket. In this case, most usually the trout is pointed upstream in pocket water, so a downstream strike will drive the hook...

I usually fish pockets from the back or front quarter. Meaning fishing 45* upstream or downstream, off to the side. I don't like being directly behind or directly upstream of structure.

Something as simple as this will bring you LOTS of strikes: Takes about 2 minutes to tie, if you are a slow tyer. I whipped up around 10 of these for a trip to a PA limestoner and had good action all day long, when nothing else would work. I've used beetles on lots of other streams in NJ...

Look to the upper Saranac branches as well. They are close enough to Lake Placid, and offer some really wild fishing out in the boonies. Good mix of small stream water in the branches to big roiling rapids in the main stem, depending on which section you fish. There's not nearly the pressure...

Beetles work most often when other flies don't. :D
