Go To Emerger Caddis Patterns ?

dwing

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
I was wondering what everyone's "Go to" emergent caddis pattern is? I don't fish a lot of caddis probably because I dont have any confidence with them.

Are there a couple of patterns that seem to get consistent results? I want to concentrate on just a few, make sure I have them in my box, & hopefully start helping me get more hookups!

Depends on waht the bugs are doing. If still under water, LaFontaine's Deep Sparkle Pupae (with and w/o bead head) is a good one. If closer to the surface, the good old softhackle is a good choice. If in the surface film, LaFontaine's Emergent Sparkle Pupae. Finally, some bugs get stuck in the surface film and die - go to Matthew's X-Caddis.

If you want to pick one to start, the ESP noted above. If you are tying these yourselves, be sure to have a very sparse sheath of sparkle yarn - it is easy to use too much and defeat the effect.

I alwawys fish a brushed shuck caddis. You can fish it deep or grease it and fish it in the film. Its a great all around caddis pattern and its my go to pattern all the time.

Down under a weighted LaFountaine DSP, in a column an unweighted DSP, in the film an ESP, adults on top in slower water a CDC and Elk (CDC body and deer hair wing or CDC wing), and in fast water and/or to imitate egg laying caddis skittering on top an EHC with palmered hackle - all patterns tied to match what's on/in the water.

Thanks for the replys... sounds like I should put the various LaFontaine ties in my box & get some experieince using them.

I generally go with La Fontaine's Emergent Sparke Pupae. I add a split show about 8 inches from the fly, and get a lot of hits as it rises toward the surface.
