There's a lot of good advice above- so here's my 2 cents. A 5wt 9 ft rod is the "best" all purpose trout rod. I think its also easier to learn how to cast with that rod. I would suggest starting with that as your first rod. The more you learn too ff and become more addicted to fly fishing...

I carry 3 boxes in my vest. One just nymphs, another all mayfly(emergers, dries ect) and another all caddis(emergers, dries ect). In my truck a keep another box of of wbuggers, bucktails.
