    Wading boots

The original Korkers had trouble keeping the soles in. They redesigned the mechanism that holds them in a year or two ago. I've seen them demonstrated at the Fly Fishing Show and the new mechanism looks pretty solid.

    Wading boots

I recently picked up a pair of Simms Blackfoot(I think thats the model) boots to replace my old Hodgeman boots that are literally falling apart after about 5 years of year round fishing. The Simms are a Vibram rubber sole. They feel different than my old felt soled boots for sure, but seem to...

You've never seen a fly like this...

Dennis, I've got some more photos I'll upload soon, and hopefully next week I can get some images of some other flies if I can swing some more lab time. Apparently, the grain issues are due to converting the files directly from .tiff to .jpg, so the next batch should be much better quality and...

You've never seen a fly like this...

1, 5, and 8 are deer hair at various magnifications. The fly wasn't sputtered long enough to actually change it visibly. Gold palladium ends up being silver anyway. The hook actually has a very flat end, but getting a good picture of it was tough. I'm hoping I can get some time on the...

You've never seen a fly like this...

It was sputtered twice for 120 seconds with gold palladium. And it still charged like crazy. Couldn't get decent focus past 10 microns.

You've never seen a fly like this...

So this year I decided to go back to school and finish my degree. This term I've had the pleasure of working with a scanning electron microscope for a Nanotechnology class. The class is putting on an art show in conjunction with a photography class consisting of images taken with the SEM. We...

    Tent & sleeping bag HELP!

Just an FYI, EMS winter sleeping bags are 30% off right now online.

    Tent & sleeping bag HELP!

I use my 3 season, single wall tent in the winter without any issues. If the tent is well ventilated, moisture isn't going to be an issue unless you're talking weeklong trips or extreme weather conditions. In general, down bags are lighter, better insulating, and smaller for the same...

Why is it that certain streams don't hold trout?

There are alot of factors that go into keeping a stream cold. Is is spring fed, or does it originate in a pond that would be susceptible to warming in the summer? Does it flow through dense forest, or does it get baked by the sun. Does it have a consistent flow in the summer to keep the rocks...

    Kick AK Skim Out

I vote we kick AK Skim off the board for not posting any fish porn from his recent trip to the Smokies! Stop posting pictures of pretty, little mountain streams and give us all what we really want to see! :hubbahubba: And for anyone who can't smell the sarcasm dripping from this post, check...

Why is it that certain streams don't hold trout?

Trout don't coexist well with other species of fish in small-scale ecosystems. Panfish in particular are very territorial when it comes to spawning habitat, so if they're thriving, its safe to assume the trout don't have sufficient spawning ground. The water may also not be clean enough or...

    Kayakers in KLG

When its running high with early spring runoff its a whitewater paradise. Can't see why anyone would try to float through it right now though.

    Complaint about Flies from Shannons

Re: Shannon's Third Annual Traditional Angler Day I've snagged bottom tons of times on their flies and have never broken a hook. If you don't like the quality, then tie your own.

    Van Campens Question

I can't really think of a single spot on the Van Campens where a 9' rod would be too long. Its a pretty open stream with plenty of room to cast. I've probably caught an equal number of fish on nymphs versus dries.

    Fly choices for May

We should start to see Sulphurs coming off soon in good numbers, and you can bet the trout will be keyed in on them. Caddis are hatching pretty well right now, and trout are taking pupa's off the surface pretty consistently. Hare's Ear and Pheasant Tail nymphs are always a good bet when...

Its my own variation on Rich Garfield's Ausable Ugly. Its very similar to a bugger.

    Klg 5/12/09

Got the day off from work today so I decided to head out to the Gorge. I've only ever fished the Gorge on one other occasion in the dead of winter because its always so crowded. I got there early this morning and found a few guys fishing the lower section not far from the parking area. I...

    Wts 5-10-2009

Got this one on a BHHE, was probably about 15" and nice and fat. Took off like a rocket when it hit the nymph and jumped straight up out of the water about 3 feet. Water was pretty high, got a few more strikes after this one, but no more fish landed.

PSA: Hair brained scheme on the Neversink

Giardia(the really nasty bacteria that you get from drinking contaminated water) has an incubation time of 4 to 7 days, FYI.
