    Bluegill Flies

Any generic popper / spider / floating bug will catch sunnies all day long. Same for wet flies - just give it some action and keep out of the weeds. Bright colors are fine - yellow, red, orange, or black and white too. We catch them on bare hooks just for fun - takes a while but they will...

PA Anglers vs Spring Ridge Club - LITTLE JUNIATA - THE COURT'S DECISION

One notable point in the Lehigh case was that the Superior Court ruled the ENTIRE river navigable based on only certain portions being historically used for commerce. They said they were not going to 'piecemeal' various sections of the river as navigable vs. non-navigable. That precedent makes...

PA Anglers vs Spring Ridge Club - LITTLE JUNIATA - THE COURT'S DECISION

First appeal[s] will have to go through the Commonwealth up to and including the PA Superior Court. Please remember that in PA the entirety of the argument rests on navigability - if navigable then open to public fishing, case closed. Any appeals will have to address the issue of...

    Fly Tying Kit?

If you want a kit don't spend that much as you will want to upgrade / not use lots of the materials. Check out the kits from Cabelas for a less expensive starter kit, OK for practice/learning but not much more. For $300 buy a good vice like a Regal or Renzetti Traveller, then start with a few...

    Looking To Buy Camping Gear

Air mattresses are NOT good in cold temps. Get a self inflating foam sleeping mat and a good sleeping bag. If you can get to Campmor in Ramsey they have everything you could ever want. I second the cap for your truck bed - you can find them used cheap.

    Oil Spill into Cannonsville Reservoir

I am assuming that this was home heating oil - also known as #2 fuel oil, same distillate as diesel engine fuel. #2 oil has a Specific Gravity of 0.89, meaning it is 11% less dense than pure water [SG = 1.0] and will therefore float. As for evaporating - #2 is much heavier than gasoline, does...

    Oil Spill into Cannonsville Reservoir

#2 fuel oil floats - not too much danger with the bottom release dam. Any oil that escapes the containment booms will of course spill over along with water at reservoir capacity >100%.

    Tilley

Best feature of the Tilley hat is the double front/rear strap system - will stay on your head in 20-30 mph wind no problem regardless of direction. If you prefer $$$ just buy a $10 'Boonie' hat from your local Army surplus store. Tilley is made from fairly heavy fabric - can get a bit much on...

    water quality post flood

I had heard about the waiver for Deposit sewage last week. Nobody can imagine the sheer volumes of chemicals, pesticides, and biohazads that were sent downstream. Stay out of the West Branch until we get some confirmed EPA data on water quality.

Post flood fishing - Common Sense please

I just returned from salvaging my cabin on the WB. If and when you wish to resume fishing please remember a few things: Water flows from the USGS website will not give you any idea what wading or floating conditions will really be like. Water in the WB is dark chocolate brown, entire...

    Delaware under the gun

April 2005 Hale Eddy peaked at ~22K I believe. We could easily see that again if not surpass it: 19K already headed down, plus all the tribs between Walton and Hale Eddy, and another 1" + of rain is expected. Bad bad situation. I am not as familiar with flood flows on the East Branch but...

    Delaware under the gun

West Branch at Walton [above the dam] currently near 19000 5 PM Tuesday 6/27.. All 19K headed downstream, Cannonsville was 101% and spilling yesterday before all this rain. Another catastrophic flood event with potential for loss of life; forget about the massive property damage and...

    not a good sign

Warning Warning Warning WB at Walton above the res. is at 14000 [10:45 AM Tuesday 6/27.] All that water must now come down the mountains, thru the Cannonsville and over the dam. Another disaster looms.

    not a good sign

Warning This is another potentially dangerous flood situation. Anticipate WB to exceed 10K - 15K. Hale Eddy is at 6K; Forecast is another 1-2 inches possible by Wed AM, flash flood warnings in effect. Avoid the entire area until we can see how things turn out. Even major roads can be...

    Catskill Report 6/20- 6/24

I believe historically June is an 'off-month' transition for the WB. Sort of a breather in between the massive May hatches and the beginning of the July - Aug activity. Any given day can be super but the month as a whole is not the peak time to be on the WB.

    anyone have a pelican?

How to make any camera work underwater: Fill bucket with water. Place camea in Ziplock bag. Slowly submerge bottom of bag into water, when all the air has been squeezed out by water pressure seal the bag leaving as little air as possible in the bag. If you want insurance double bag it the...

    For you esopus fans...

This is a very interesting ruling. In short the court has ruled that 'Clean Water' is not limited to sewage or pollution discharge but includes dirt, silt, and other natural / organic matter. So, if a dam release impacts downstream flows by making the river too muddy / turbid / silty, etc. it...

    do you wear a PFD?

I bought an inflatable CO2 vest from Cabelas - it comes in a small velcro pouch with a belt. About the size of a large soup can, very lightweight. If conditions dictate and/or I am alone in unfamiliar area I wear it for sure. Pull the lanyard and the vest pops out tethered on with a cord...
