    Fly Rod combo

Check out the Lamson Velocity reels. I think the 3.5 is about right for a 9ft 9wt rod. Last time I looked I think they were around $285.00?? You cant go TOO cheap on a reel in the salt, it will just give you frustration. I like the 40-plus intermediate line as good all-around salty line for...

    Flies for Blues

Crease fly on a long shank. Very often they will take it and turn and you can hook them in the upper lip. I had one that lasted through 8-10 blues in the 8-10# range. Chewed up, but still worked. At times you can get away with no wire.

Airflo Forty Plus cold water line

It's a good line. I use the fast-sink (7in ps) and intermediate for Stripers, blues, albies, etc. Casts well, sinks quick, good "contact" in current. I like it.

    Locals - Gotta love 'em

What you've got to understand is: There are a lot guys out there who don't really like to fish. What they like to do is talk about what they've caught. There is almost nothing they wont do, to be able to say they caught something. Lying is a last resort. If you've ever run into a guy on the...

    Current BFB success stories?

BFB needs rain. I'm sure there are fish there, but water levels have got to be getting pretty low.

    BFB Directions Question

It's a great spot and usually holds some fish, but I can't stand listening to a high-powered rifle report while I'm trying to fly fish for a trout. Kind of ruined it for me.

    Basic knots to get going...

Knots are everything. All the gear in the world wont land you a fish if you aren't proficient at knot tying. "Practice at home" Best advice. Practice tying the basics until they are rote. So, you can do them by feel without even looking. Also: Learn "Surgeon's knot" (double or triple) and...

    Fishing the proper depth

Nymph fishing is a pain in the butt!! Effective? You bet! Fun? Not when you have to do a lot of prospecting. Not for me anyway. However, when they nymph bite is on, and you've got the depth/drift/fly figured out, it is, in a word: killing. Probably the most effective and efficient way of...

This is great!! Now we get to be the "locals"!! Those damn fancy-ass flyfishermen from out west wanna come here and catch all "our" fish. Go back to big-sky country and stay off the turnpike!! Your leaving too much space between you and the car in front of you!! Where 'd you think you are...

    Tuna-fly-fishing?

Great book on the topic: "Tuna on the Fly" by Tom Gilmore Came out just a few months ago. Very informative. Although I haven't done it (False Albies is the largest tunoid I have gotten on the fly), the book made me realize I don't want to go for the really big stuff. I be happy with Skipjacks...

    starting at 65

SOB: Never too late brother!! I don't fish the Beav, but I would think a 4 or 5 wt rod, either 8.5, or 9ft. (9ft probably better) would be suitable.

    What stood out in 06?

Stand-outs for '06: In general it was a very good year for Stripers as far as numbers overall Tried out Flats fishing for Stripers. Very cool. Not unlike Bonefish. Hooked Stripers in excess of 20lbs on the fly (estimate) this year. Broke both off... Hooked and boated a 31 inch Albie on 10wt...
