Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!
I have fished the Esopus for almost 40 years and this guy is a a-hole. Most of the browns are hatchery fish, there is very little successful spawning for browns in this river. The rainbows on the other hand are 100% wild. They have not stocked rainbows in at least 30 years.
The river used to be...
Make sure you click the link in Joe D's post and then click the link on the website to sign the petition. (email campaign in reality) All those bottles of Fish Oil capsules in the drug store used to be menhaden and most of them are harvested out of the Chesapeake Bay.

I have probably used every indicator made at one time or another. Now I stick to thingamabobbers or strike putty when an indicator is called for. I like the strike putty when fishing an emerger or wet dead drift in the film. Try a small wet ant 18" - 24" under a tiny ball of stike putty -...

East Jersey's banquet is March 12th so it does not interfear with North's. I'll be glad to save you a seat. All the beer and wine you can drink is included in the price, so I know you'll get your money's worth!
Hi-Viz tied very very very sparse for synthetic wings. Most commercially tied flies use enough material in the wings to tie a dozen spinners. Hi-Viz reflects a lot of light and can usually be seen at dusk.
If it is really old, unless the store is willing to mark in down further, you would be better off with a newer rod in the same price range. You can still get complete Cortland or LL Bean outfits in this price range and the newer rods are so much better then anything 10+ years old. Unless of...
I agree with the other comments and also wanted to mention your hackle is heavier behind the wing then in front. It should be the other way around. If using 2 hackles it is traditional to wrap 2 wraps of each hackle behind the wing and then 3 in front. With todays hackle you can often use one...
I have an electric smoker that uses wood chips / chunks for flavor. I have used various woods over the years, hickory, mesquite, apple, cherry, oak, etc.
Any wood from a tree that produces nuts or fruit is usually a good wood for smoking. They all add a slightly different flavor and can be...
It probably has more to do with drag and as Pete said the fact they see the fly before the leader.
In pocket water or any other time where the currents are mixed you can get a better drag free drift by fishing downstream. As your fly enters the slower water of the pocket, the fast currents...
The amount of hair to use depends on how you expect to fish it. For slow water I use less hair for a sparse wing. Looks more natural. I also like it to flair a little gives the look of a fluttering caddis.
For fast water I make the wing heavier to help keep the fly floating.
In my fly box...
With the proper casting stroke, rod length should have no bearing on the loop size. A longer rod will allow you more distance with less effort since the loading move will be longer at the rod tip.
You casting stoke should be as close to a straight line (and not an arc) as possible. The less...

To answer your original question. Guide vs. lesson. If you get the right guide you can have both. I would suggest you call the Baxter house or one of the other shops in the area and explain to them you are a beginner. Tell them you need a guide that is willing to teach as well.
Some...
If the state would commit to using the current stocking money to do stream improvements, it could work.
There are many sections of the Beaverkill that are getting too wide and flat, which increases the warming during hot weather.
Doing work to narrow and deepen these sections would go a...
I used the Stimulator for years both in the east and west and caught plenty of fish, particularly large fish.
Started using the Madam X 2 years ago out west and the fish seem to like it.
Recently I have seen versions of the Stimulator tied with the addition of rubber legs. Sounds like the...
I just got back from Aruba on 12/21 and had no problem carrying on my rods, reels, and flies. I just had to remember to put my pocket knife and pliers in the checked baggage.
I have a case that will hold up to 6 rods without the tubes, reels and a few fly boxes. It is legal carry-on size and...
