Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!
Try fishing a small egg pattern paired with a stone or a PT under a ton of shot. The fish are still pretty active but you need to get down in the deeper holes. I think the water is a little too cold for them to be chasing down big streamers but I wouldn't be surprised if dragging one along would...
I'm with Skipper on this. On the beaverhead anything under 5x is too light. Most guides on that river will have you fish 3 or 4x fluoro even with tiny flies. The tricos in Dillon fly shops are tied on hooks with large eyes to accommodate heavier tippet.
While the commercial guys hold some blame I see the recreational anglers just as culpable for what could be an impending crash. What goes on every May-July off Ocean and Monmouth counties is disgusting. The amount of 30lb + fish taken is absurd. Nobody needs to take home 2 cows to feed their...
I think it's a gimmick that will sell to guys who can't accept that fishing is a blood sport. Barbless j hooks work just fine in my opinion.
That being said, fish get hooked, occasionally bleed, and sometimes fish die even when practicing responsible C&R.
CT,
I'm not going to weigh in on this topic one way or another. With that said, can you please post a link with any sort or credibility? Posting a link on the topic of global warming per the heritage foundation is akin to an anti-hunter posting a link from PETA. You get it?
Perhaps when you...
The stream is covered. As mentioned it has made wading dangerous, and fishing a nymph almost impossible. Here's a photo from a trip in Early May. Almost every drift looked like this.
There are no shops on the Esopus itself. I believe there is an Orvis shop at Hunter Mountain, that's as close as you get.
Clean your boots when you're done. Didymo has overtaken the river. Also, don't waste your time fishing nymphs, almost every drift will pick up rock snot. Hopefully the...
I'm quite sure it is Didymo. I called region 3 DEC two weeks ago after I first saw it. They are aware of it and I believe have sent people to evaluate and test it.
If it is infact Didymo I'm extremely scared from the future of the river. For it to be quite as heavy as it is this early in the...
If you like catching 16"+ browns and bows all day then do yourself a favor and fish the beaverhead for a few days. I imagine runoff won't be too much of an issue either, considering it's a tailwater.
Nymph with small (16-22) PT and chartreuse brassies and you will catch fish. Be sure to use 3...
CMM, do you ever shut your mouth? If these places are as special to you as you claim, then please be quiet. You blab non-stop.
As far as the Esopus, it looks like didymo has hit the river. I'm no expert but from what I saw recently on the river there are blooms. So please clean your boots after...
The portal is a blessing and a curse. What do you think keeps the river cold in August when the Beaverkill is shut down? It certainly has dumped silt into the river but also provides cold water during the summer releases from the portal.
Some of the lower tribs warm up over the summer, so the...
There is no need for C&R on the Esopus. All C&R stretches do is draw crowds. Any decline in the fishery over the past decade has been the result of storms and sedimentation from the portal. The meat fishermen do their damage on stockie browns, which are far easier to catch than the wild bows the...
I'd go for the 5wt. I think a six is too much rod for a go-to rod.
3, 5, 7. In my opinion those are the three rods you need for our area.
Sub 8' 3 WT for the small streams
9' 5 Wt- dries, nymphs, small streamers
9' 7 Wt- For throwing the meat
Yellow Works everywhere. Tie them big enough and you're bound to hook some big fish.
Most of my winter tying has been big Galloup style streamers. This big boy is a #2 streamer hook and #1 red octopus hook.
But sometimes I 'll tie a few for small freestone browns. Like this #6 Bow river...
I think if you're doing yourself a disservice if you lock yourself into the two rods you named. As the others have said, cast them and try to get a feel for each.
The G2 is a great fishing rod but aesthetically falls far short of the winstons and sages. When you're dishing out over $600 for a...
I own two. One for my 5 wt, one for my 9. I love them. They're light and durable. Great looking reels too.
I assume that you dislike the spool removal. It's a pain initially but you get used to it.
Just a few things on the links you provided and some general thoughts.
1- What is wrong with a progressive environmentalism? I don't agree with that organization but as sportsmen shouldn't we be taking the lead on environmental issues? What would the greater Yellowstone region or the Sierras be...
