Try Bagels for you on Morris Tpk in Short Hills or the Bagel Chaetae in downtown Millburn. The hell with the Bagel try the Millburn Deli across the street you will not be sorry.

Are bagels even something you drive out of the way for? I've never had one thats been good enough to really distinguish itself as something special.

If you enjoy a good bagel, you might not know what ya got until you live a hundred miles away and the only bagel you can buy, is a frozen Lender's Bagel or one baked in the corporate kitchen in the back of the store, using a recipe developed in an office. The bagel's here are just a bread dough dipped in hot water and baked, giving it a fluffy "risen" texture... There was a time when I was in college(with MANY students from downstate and Jersey) that a local establishment used to have bagels flown in from nyc a couple of times per week. Yes, flown in.

Don't even discuss pizza. The rest of the world truly doesn't know why it's missing.

    Re: Bagels

Speaking of buttered rolls, when I was a kid they were the thing in Northeast Jersey. Almost every deli or bakery sold fresh kaiser rolls with a crunchy outside and a fluffy inside (reminded me of genuine Italian bread) with butter. I live in NW Jersey and cannot find a good kaiser roll anywhere. They are all like Wonder bread shaped into a round roll and spray painted light brown on the top. I can still get some great Italian bread in NE Jersey places like Lodi or Garfield, but where are the great kaiser rolls?

I also lived out there. They raved about their "Chicago style" pizza. Here's what I thought of it

NJ is home to great Italian food, bagels, Taylor ham/egg/cheese sandwiches, the world's best pizza, and diners open 24/7/365.

I grew up a block away from Orlandos. That semolina bread was my main source of sustenance as a kid.

I read up on what makes NYC pizza so great. So many talked about NYC water being the secret. Too bad we can't get THAT up here....
