Hello all, I am very new to fly fishing and am getting a little confused with what flies to use and when. Do you folks know what works locally at this time of year and also later into the summer? Where do you buy your flies as there really don't seem to be any specialty shops in the area: cabelas...llbean etc?

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

you will get many different answers to this question...Try and match the current hatch as close as possible is always good advice..On the Schroon, I have found that standard attractor dries such as Ausable & Grey Wulff, work well as do adams and tan comparaduns...Some standard nymph patterns (pheasant tails, hares Ears, black stones, copper johns) and some streamers such as muddlers and zonkers...

You can try the Crossroads (Chestertown) and Beaver Brook Outfitters (Weavertown) for some local flies and info...Havent been to the stores in a while so cant say how knowledgeble the current staff is....

One recommendation, hire a local guide for a half or full day, he will save you hours and hours of trying to break the code of the local fish habits...Chris Stiles is a good local guide in Chestertown Chris Stiles - Southern Adirondack Fly Fishing Guide - 518-494-5085 and is a regular on these forums...

Good Luck!

scroon is ok. heavily fished though and ive never gotten anything large out of it. it is a pretty river though, for sure.

as for hatches -- this is as good as anything for the entire foothills area I think:

Here's stocked brown from last season.

This hatch chart is accurate. Schroon has an excellent stonefly population

Mostly a put & take river. River flow is solely managed for boat traffic in Schroon Lake and not fish management. August the river usually gets cooked. A small group of us are trying to change that. Some browns do hold over in deeper pools.

Stop in down at the crossroads in Cherstertown. the guy there is very knowledgeable and they have a great selection of gear and flies if you need anything. they have a very good section of tying materials as well if you need to pick some things up. The river itself is nice but its not the easiest to access. Some great pond fishing around there though!

As others have said, hit up the Crossroads for flies and check out their updated chalkboard for whats hatching and working on the river. The stores near the dam. Some must haves in the box are stonefly nymphs, stimulaters, various caddis patterns, and whatever mayflies may be coming up. You fish the river yet DH? Cant make it to my place til the end of June.
