West Branch Garbage Dump?

_ritter_ said:
.........

Those that help in cleaning up the garbage strewn along the banks of the West Branch should be applauded for their efforts as stewards of their home waters.

It is too bad that the propery owners are not responsible for their mess and have others clean it up for them.

Tight lines,

...............

After you've finished your labors in cleaning up the mess along the embankment you should post a few signs that say:

NO DUMPING - NO LITTER

at the pull off so your hard work won't have to be repeated in the spring.

Best...

Cingras,

I'm not sure what town it's in... The place is so remote, I'm not even sure if it's in a town. :)... I think Future Fanatic and WB Catetchuman <sp> both offered the use of a truck to at least get the garbage out of there.

_Ritter_... Are you in? We can use the help.

trashing

That's great that we can put the stuff in the pick-ups but where is it going after that? If we got a Town truck I'm sure they would haul it off to their landfill. A quick call to the West Branch angler could verify the Town and I can take it from there. I'm tellin ya, it's worth the effort and it might avoid two guys driving around with pick-ups full of trash and nowhere to go. Am I missing something?

I've been watching and waiting to see if the town truck thing worked out before I threw myself (my truck)into the mix. It seems that the earliest I could be there on Saturday the eleventh would be around 12:00 - 12:30 pm. I had read earlier that the idea was to clean-up in the AM and fish in the PM. I'd be more than willing to have you guys leave the big stuff roadside and pick it up myself while you guys are hip deep in the river some place. (having done all the hard work. :) It would allow me to still do my small part (AND avoid being put in a plastic bag with the other trash, too.) ;) I would just need directions to THE SPOT and any place that might permit us to drop off the trash.

John

P.S. I know some people/places up here that would not notice one more appliance or a few more tires in the yard...
Of course I'm kidding... well, about suggesting that I would do that; those places DO exist...

trashing

As far as I can tell the Town truck idea hasn't gotten off the ground. It starts with 1 or 2 phone calls that I'd be willing to make if I had some information as the proper Municipality to speak to. Let me know otherwise I'll be there regardless of the issue of where this stuff is going to go.

Hi,

I am working on the town truck thing and will let you know.

I guess the plan is to meet at 7 and work in the morning. Is that right?

Jim

Jim or Dennis, give me an idea what time you plan to be at the garbage pile. I would have trouble being at McDonald's at 7.
Chris

Garbage Day

Is this thing still on or what? Do we have a place to take the garbage?
If this is partially owned by WBA maybe we can use their dump truck/dumpsters?

trashing

I think it's still on but no one has responeded to my recent post or PM concerning some time details. I plan on being there, maybe not at the crack of dawn, but soon thereafter.

Cingras,

I sent you a PM last week with most of the details (at least all that I knew of).

I plan on being up there bright and early. Some of you can't make it until after 11:00am. That's fine. If anyone else needs directions, I'll PM them to you. In the meantime, I'd like to meet up in the McDonalds parking lot at 7:30ish.

Thanks Dennis, see you there. Where do you plan on fishing in the afternoon?

Hi,

We are all set with a dumpster that will accept trash bags and appliances, tires, etc.

We have clear plastic bags and some tools.

I have been telling people to meet at McDonalds about 7:00 am on Saturday. This is rain or shine as the dumpster is committed.

See you all there,

Jim

Thanks Jim

See you Saturday.
I'll have my trailer with me and will bring some rope.
I have to help my neighbor move some of his things up to his new house in Honesdale Sat. morning. I will get an early start and try to be in Honesdale by 7, unload, and be at the shack by 8.
Take your time with breakfast.

Only a few more days left... Who's in...

Me
Midnight Poacher
WB Catechuman
Cingras
Big Spinner
Michael M.
Andre?
Future Fanatic?

So far it looks like we have a definite 6 with 2 pending... Anyone else?

Recruits

I'll try to get my northern neighbor to come help out and possibly one other person.

With all this rain I would advise bringing a pair of Korkers,Salmon River Claws, old golf spikes or Mountain climbing spikes if you have any. That hill is going to be reeeeal slippery.

It may be easier to take some of the garbage down to the river and float it out in boats rather than drag it up that hill.

My boat will be close by if we decide to do that. Maybe Jim and MP can have their boats available also if needed.

Jon is certainly right about the slope of that hill presenting a challenge. Does anyone have one of those plastic kid's snow sleds? With a rope we could bunge the bags to the sled and pull it up from the roadside. I have rope and will bring it, I'll even throw a 3k weight hoist and several lengths of 20' tow chains in the truck, maybe it will help with draging the washer up the slope.

Dennis, just in case there is a last minute change in plans would you post a message that the cleanup is off. I'll check on line before driving up Saturday morning.

Michael M.

As of this morning, the cleanup is still on. Tomorrow morning, I will be at the McDonalds at 7:30am and will wait until 8:00am.

Well, since the truck is not needed, I can be there bright and early instead of after twelve. I will hook up with you all in Hancock. See you all in the morning... er... later this morning.
John

Dennis, if you check this before you go, could you send directions to me (in case I miss you at McDonalds).

It was great to meet those of you who came. Hopefully, the next time we meet, our feet will be firmly placed under water and not sliding down hill in garbage, humus and mud. I'm hoping that a shower will prevent anything we unearthed from growing on me(good luck to all of you).

Now, how about renaming that stretch of water....

John

All I can think of is Deer bones. I can still see them. Hey, will an alpaca keep my lawn trimmed so I can fish more?

Hi guys,

Just got back from the float my float trip. We floated the East Branch and it was slow for the most part.

There was a flurry of Isonychias about 4:30 and we had some chances. A couple of nice fish we did NOT hook and a small one we did!

Great day on the river. Thanks for helping with the cleanup.

Talk to you all soon,

Jim

Hi guys,

It was fun!

Remember, Saturday the 18th we can use help at Junction Pool to do knotweed stuff at 9:00 am if anyone will be in Hancock!

Thanks again,

Jim

We'll have to rename the pool from the 'Trash Pool' or 'The Washing Machine Pool' to something else now. How about, "The CarPool" :)... Hell, we could have built a new car with all of the car parts we found in there!

Who showed up? Cingras, Future Fanatic, WB Catechumen, Jim Serio, Pat (Jim's wife), Mike M., & Myself.

A few of the items found:
.Car Door
.Car Gastank
.Car Transmission
.Car Tires (Many came with custom rims)
.The door for the bed of a pickup.
(We really weren't far off from actually building a new car.)
.Washing Machine
.Refridgerator
.House Door
.Box Spring
.Multiple Deer bones & skulls
...and other trash.

Cingras giving new meaning to the 'Double Haul'. The hill is pretty steep. Luckily someone brought a good, strong, long rope with them. It really helped.

This is one of many loads of trash we took out.

I'll post more pics later on... and I'll make the ones already posted a little smaller.

Well, I'm a sucker for alliteration, so how about these as some possible new names:

Deer Rib Run or,
Rolling Rock Run or,
Dirty Diaper Drift (of course those diapers are just a memory)or,
Glass Path Pool or,
Stove Pipe Pool...

Any others?

Cingras53, remember, we're really not sure they were ALL deer bones; we did find some clothes mixed in with some of them...
Alpacas would keep the grass down, but you'd still have to mow the weeds. :)

NEFF Run

It was good to put a few more faces to names while getting a real good workout and returning a small part of the river back to what it should be.

Thankfully no one was hurt- Dennis, I don't know how you stayed so clean after sliding a good 20 feet down the hill.

Maybe we can do something like that once or twice a year. Doesn't matter which river.

I'd like to send a thanks to John O'Conner from Crane's Restaurant for getting the dumpster and donating $25 towards the tipping fee.
I don't know where the rest of the money is coming from.

Thanks to Jim S. for his part in coordinating the project.
(Jim- Probably won't be around Sat., I will be up north Thurs-Sun unless the water is too high )

Ha... You saw that? I didn't think anyone saw that! :)

I'm not sure where Crane's is, but maybe we can get an address and put a little plug at the top of the page for a month?

Jim, I have to see what my schedule is like next weekend (it looks good). I think I'll be able to help out.

Jon, Once or twice a year is good for me. Maybe I can create an html page... Someone can submit a river for cleanup and we can go in and take care of it. I'll look into getting some 'NO DUMPING' signs.

In the words of Johnny Cash..It was a 56, 57 , 58 , 59 60 automobile...I took it one piece at a time.

After seeing your picture FF, I believe the backhoe stories... If we ever meet up, I will have my firearm hidden and at the ready!!!!;)

Well. aren't you the perceptive one Mr. OXlair...

I could give a shit about cleaning up garbage... The only reason I went was to make sure that those other chumps thought those bones were DEER bones....the only reason I "took up" flyfishing was to have access to my "dump". It was shortly after this close call "cleanup" event that I bought the backhoe and the 120 acres... no more "garbage" cleanups for me. I dispose of MY garbage 6 feet under...
