Waders

My Simms G3's have finally worn out after 4 good seasons. Looking for some new waders. Love the Simms, but was wondering if anyone had suggestions? Anyone tried the new Patagonia's? They're pricey, but...Any other good ones? I fish salt and sweetwater. Thanks. FE

I went the cheaper route before I get Simms waders next year. I picked up a pair of Frogg Toggs, and they are absolutely awesome. Built well, and easily the most flexibility of any wader I've used before.

I bought a pair of the Orvis Sonic's, i love them, packable and extremely light, they fit into a tiny compression sack, they are awesome......so far.....

Simms waders are by fae the best! I have tried all the high end brands i.e. Cloudveil/Pattys/ORVIS etc... Out of all the waders I have tried, the ORVIS waders were by far the WORST... Im not sure if their manufacturer was just weined off baby formula or what, but for the last 5 season, atleast 2 guys come to salmon camp in october, raving about ORVIS waders, to only have them LEAK THE FIRST DAY OUT OF THE BOX...Its UNREAL. And yes, im talking about 5+ seasons in a ROW!!!!.. FROG TOGGS and the cheapo hodgman waders are AWESOME. Hit up Pineville or Fat nancys for an aboslute KILLER DEAL on them.... I am going on 3 season on my g3's with not one ISSUE!!!! They are unbelieve! For those of you have fished with me, you know im not easy on my stuff...

SIMMS ALL THE WAY!!!! Next season g4z's will be in the stable....Not because the g3's are bad, but because I wanna take a leak without taking off all my shitttt

Orvis waders were indeed plagued with problems and a Customer Service rep told me they changed manufacturers because of that. I have three pairs of the newer replacements which have been good to date.

Well hopefully you get the G3s replaced.without an issue. If not I would seriously consider the Redington sonic Pro waders. Perhaps even as a backup pair. An excellent wader at a price below the top of the line vendors.

I too am a big Simms guys wearing the Exstreams in the winter, and G4 chest high and the G3 guide pants. I can't say enough about them all.

I was able to work out a deal with a retailer this spring and picked up a pair of the new Redington Sonic Pro zip front pants at a cost I could not pass up. I have been wearing them exclusively for the past 2 months to give them a good run and be able to offer accurate feedback. I am heading out to the Ausable today for a 2nd week and will only be packing them. They will also be heading out to Oregon a month from today for my 4 day Deschutes trip.

So far the Redingotn Sonic pro's are awesome. Unlike the G4z's, the zipper on these go down far enough so it is easy to "free willy" when he needs to go. One noticeable difference is the neoprene stockingfoot itself. I am used to the prefect fit of the Simms booties and the Redingntons are not as form fitting, but this certainly is not a reason to look away from them. As it stands now, the waders are receiving a 2 thumbs up.

While I like Orvis gear, fishing exclusively their reels and owning a couple hydros trout rods, I concur with the feedback on their waders. They are not worth the money. I owned 5 pairs in 2 years, nothing but problems. Fortunately they have a great warranty/customer satisfaction policy so I was able to get all my money back on an Orvis gift card and used it at Whitakers to buy my first pair of Simms. :)

While this is of topic, nothing to date can compete with my Korker Guide boots. Their style was just replaces with the new Chrome boots with a new sole setup, but my current ones have way too much life left in them to replace. Studded felt for adirondack waters like the Ausable and Saranac while their carbide replaceable studded rubber soles are the tickets for the Salmon River and other related streams.

I was going to buy the Orvis Sonics, or the new Redingtons, but neither had my shoe size. I also have the problem with their body proportions on most waders, because the higher your shoe size goes, the larger the overall wader. I'm not small by any means, but I'm no behemoth either, I just have big feet. The Frogg Toggs also fit into a compression sack. Next year I'll buy my custom stockingfoot simms, I was on a tight budget this year though.

I had the Orvis Tailwaters, a disaster after two years they gave me a full refund and also took 30% off anything I wanted to buy, so I went with the Sonics so far I think they are great. I went with the XXL and bought a pair of size 15 Korkers Redside's for $99 at Tight Lines they both fit great.

After going through 2 pairs of Orvis waders in 3 seasons, I made the switch to Simms (G3s). I got 4 years of use out of them fishing or working in them 4-5 days/week before retiring that pair and getting a second pair. I can't say enough great things about Simms products. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Simms the only major wader maker still making theirs in the US? So many here bash others for buying rods made overseas but not waders (?). A high end pair of waders costs nearly as much as a high end fly rod these days....

Brian,

The 2 low end tier simms waders are made on China...Freestone and blackfoot...All others are made right in bozeman

Got a Pair of Redington Sonic Pros about a month ago to replace a pair of Redington Barrierflex that were just 14 years old and had been used hard, could still use em but in the last four years i was repairing the pinholes at the beginning of spring and at least once before fall. They were used at least 150-200 days a year for the first 4 years then i got out alot less because of mandatory forced overtime.
I couldn't be happier so far with the Redington Sonic Pros, the zipper works like a charm and the fit is perfect as well as the bootie has been improved.
I had been ready to purchase a pair of Simms G4Z waders, but i saved half the cost and can use that money for that Grey's Streamflex XF2 11' 4weight I tested and want.I will be adding to my Weinbrenner/Borger feltsole w/carbide studs boots with a pair of Simms Rivershed boots, just worried about sizing .I wear a size #13 and i hear that Simms boots run small, will i have to buy a size #14?
