Upper Saucon

Upper Saucon fished fairly well today. 8 browns and 4 bows, all small fish but was better than sitting home. Most took a size 18 CB PT.

O10, the post was for your benefit with regards to the question of purchasing a PA license. Best money you will spend.
Yes the parr marks on the small rainbow are evident.

A special shout-out to Grobert. I watched his latest video this morning and quickly tied up a few of his PT's before I left for the river. The only addition was the copper bead for some added weight. I even went as far as to use Danville 6/0 olive thread for the pattern. But in reality I guess I had no choice because that's is the only size and color of thread made. Right Matt?

How far up were you. I have caught a lot of small bows far upstream from bingen that I suspected were stream bred but was never sure. I also catch some big bows in the summer down low that I assume are coming from the Lehigh in search of colder water. I affectionately call them saucon steelhead.

There are a lot of big browns in the park.....a challenge to catch......Just watch out for piles of shit......nice creek...and nice fish......

I fished from Saucon Rail trail above Grist Mill Park, down to Water Street Park. I was surprised to see the parr marked rainbows, figured all the bows were from stocking.

There are no big fish in the Saucon, anywhere! All spot burner bastards.

The Saucon has been burned to a crisp on this site many times....................:flamethroSPOT...............It is very crowded where ALL the big fish are.......

Again beware of shit piles.....

The biggest fish I ever took out of there was oddly at the spot where most people fish--that bridge hole right at the park. I had driven up very early and had gotten to the stream about 20 minutes before the sun came up in anticipation of the trico hatch. While waiting- I got bored and decided to throw a big kelly galloup streamer that was already rigged on my rod just before sun-up. A few casts later A big brown of about 20'' and beautiful colors was on and easy to land on the 1x tippet I had setup on the rod already. The trico hatch was pretty much irrelevant at that point, since 6-14'' fish were not going to be as much fun after seeing a fish of this size come out of the stream. I've seen a few others that big on the surface over the years, but they are sneaky and usually in tough lies.

BTW has anyone ever checked out those limestone holding springs in the baseball field that is right next to the stream? I was walking back to my car and looked in the springs a couple years ago and saw a ton of trout in there- many of which looked like wild browns and were nice sized 14-18'' fish. Couldn't believe it. I also saw one rogue brown that must have been 22''+ , but he looked like a dark stocked breeder or something which made me wonder if this area had been stocked for a local kids fishing tourny or something. I'd be curious to know if anyone has more info on this.

Fly 14, those fish in the hatchery runs do come in from the river during high water. I have seen some cruisers in there. I guess they run up that pipe that sticks out. On a side note my biggest trout ever has come from the saucon. He measured 26 1/2 inches. That was in 2005. I hooked him three weeks in a row and finally landed him.

A guy told me a story when I was fishing one day..he said he fished there all the time. He said a thirty inch brown was caught at the giant cement wall, a few days before I was there. There are some nice and wily fish in that stretch.....I usually fish elsewhere, as there isn't as many people or piles of shit....:)

I believe it.... I saw a fish that was in the upper 20s/30" range one summer in that shallow featureless section 1/4 mile or so above where rt 78 crosses the stream. He was just laying on the bottom still abd wasnt active, but i spoke to a guy on stream a month later that said he saw the fish attack his little fish he had on in the riffs upstream. With the lehigh downstream and habitat that stream has- u just never know whats in there.

That flat is one of my favorite trico spots. I never have crowding issues there. I wish more could be done to protect that stream as it is the best in the lhv. It seems no officials really care about it.I'd hate to see it degrade like the little Lehigh or bushkill. The one saving grace is the wide buffer zones that are along the stream so silting should never really be too much of a problem. My main concerns are poaching and the lack of respect by the hispanics that use the area. We should form some kind of group or something to protect it. Tu in the area seems not to care about the river. They are more concerned about dams on the bushkill which never will come down.

I'm good at writing letters....couple times some things even got done.....don't know if they were the right things, but things.....

I would help, if I can...I really enjoy that creek...

This is a big problem on a bunch of NJ waters not just trout. There seems to be a large hispanic, asian and eastern european bucket brigade. The sad thing is I think a lot of them are just seeking a source of protein but a lot of these fish should not be consumed. As soon as word gets out about a good place to fish with little oversight the trash starts to appear. I am mean both people and literal trash. Split Rock Res is a great example.

Go to Van Campen's in the summer...It is like Tijuana....
