Tying Books on a Kindle

NewFlyD

Nymphing is down and dirty
I am new to tying and looking to advance my skills. Im looking to expand on my technique and the patterns that I can tie. I thought that picking up a few tying books may be helpful. Is it worth getting tying books on a kindle or is it just better to get the actual book? Any info would be appreciated.

You can learn a lot on you tube. Johnny utah posts on this site and has a lot of good video on you tube

Good question, it all depends. If I am tying at home then I personally prefer books. If I am away on a trip or camping, then I would prefer a kindle in color. The reason for this, I feel it is very impracticle to take books with you on bussiness trips or pleasure trips. A kindle is simple and easy. Now let me throw one more monkey wrench into the mix, Where I go camping and fishing, good luck getting any kind of signal. I do use my laptop in my tying room a lot any more to post pictures or comment on threads just like this. So I feel the wise choice for me here is not to answer with a yes or no on this subject. It is an individual choice along with usage.

Sincerely
Andy Brasko

if you download books into a kindle, why would a signal be needed? kindle is a storage device, just turn it on and read the book

Youtube has a wealth of tying information on it. If you wish i can recommend several channels on there. But as far as books vs kindle. Which is better, well I would say neither is better than the other, and recommend that you get whatever can or want on the kindle and if you cant get it on the kindle then go with the book.

As a 1-yr tyer, I would echo mbwmn's comment on live & in-person. It's incredible the techniques, tips, and tricks you can pick up from an experienced tyer. You also get immediate feedback, both during and after tying. For at home, I'd recommend "The Benchside Introduction to Fly Tying" by Ted Leeson & Jim Schollmeyer, a $45 book reference with LOTs of pictures. Welcome to the dark side... Tom

I don't tie flies, but if i did i would want the book, and many books to use as reference manuals. The kindle is for romance novels, Fabio.

With a book you will always have it.

Unless you LOAN it out to someone and never see it again.

Or your house catches fire.

Or you loan it out.

Or your sprinkler system in the house goes off and soaks it.

Or you loan it out to a friend.

Or you spill your bottle of head cement on it and welds it together.

Or you loan it out.

Or the book developes a bad case of mold.

Or you loan it out to a friend.

OR YOU LOAN IT OUT TO A FRIEND AND NEVER SEE IT EVER AGAIN.

Can I please borrow a few of your books?

I prefer autographed copies.

I am surprised that no one brought this up....

The software for the Kindle...

Where do you think it will be at in say 3 - 5 - 8 years from now?

Remember 3.1 ? or how about the 5.5 inch floppy discs?

So what ever book you buy now for a Kindle or any other type of electronic book will be gone in a few years time.

The book.... or magazine...

You will still have it in your hands 20 years from now.

Unless you let someone BORROW it and DOESN'T RETURN YOUR PROPERTY.

Anyway....

The book it the only way to go if you want to keep it.

Speaking of books -- I have a First Edition Autographed by Art Flick -- "Art Flicks NEW Streamside Guide" Great book for anyone wanting to learn about Flies although it is dated -- It was for many many years the "BIBLE" on May Flies. Thats when Swisher and Richards took it a step further in Selective Trout and tried to go Deeper than Art did. To this day those books are a wealth of knowledge (See Below)

You know, when you take a quick (or even not so quick) look at the 2nd book, it looks like Art wants to do something else - streamside. With wings.

How true this statement is -- Man could you imagine spending all that money on those books and your Kindle Software gets outdated or your kindle Crashes and cant be recovered -- Thats a scary thing

Peace

I believe the ebooks are here to stay for a while. I just hope they will come up with some standardized version of the format soon so once you purchase an ebook you can download it on all your electronic devices - the Kindle, iPad or your computer.
I agree with Andy B. where I use books and youtube at home and my iPad or iPhone while camping/vacation or business trips. It's just so much "lighter" to pack a single device which I'll have with me anyway than couple books. Plus once you go fishing to a new place away from home soon you'll realize that the flies are different here and you don't have them in your books - youtube will be your best friend here.

AK made a good point about electronic devices getting outdated, but hidden in his post was another point.

If someone "borrows" a book, you're short one book.
If someone borrows your Kindle, you lost ALL your books.
