Terrestrials Anyone?

sstasiak

Super Pupa
Has anyone had any action on terrestrials lately? I've been seeing a ton of grasshoppers, beetles, and ants around but haven't had a chance to try any of them yet this year.

Thanks James

Are you fishing them subsurface or on top, and how are you fishing them(along the banks strictly or everywhere)?

Yesterday, I fished a grasshopper for the first time this year, and had excellent results. I used that kooky Madame X. The water was dangerously high and I was sorta forced to fish near the banks. The hopper accounted for more fish than the dropper. :applaudit

Mostly all subsurface. Holding water near the bank is a sure thing. However, a subsurface ant is a good summer prospecting pattern from bank to bank.

Ants also make a great choice when fishing a dropper.

Many fish will pounce on a terrestrial fished under water. Most people don't think to fish flies traditionally known as dries below surface, but there are times when they work even better fished "wrong".

Crickets are also an often overlooked winner. Fish them on top, in the film, or like a nymph. I start with them on top, then if that is not producing let it sink. The fish will let you know when you put it where they want it!

I fished more then I would like to admit this weekend and a large majority of my fish were caught on terestrials. My favorite patters for July and August are a Mini Cyrnobal, Foam Beatles, CDC Ants, and foam ants. I caught a majority of my fish on a Dan bailey foam beatle size 8... When I fish Beatles I like to slam them on the water as to bring attention to fly. If a fish is folowing the fly but not takeing I will twitch it. I also caught fish on an ant sub surface. Usualy when fishing terestrials I will cast to rising fish or on the bank.

Nice seeing you at Rays... did you get your %10 discount? Next time ask Ron he will take care of you.

I have had great success with the Madame X have your tried a Turks? Chances are if the X is working the Turks will produce.

I spend a lot of money in there so Ron always hooks me up. The next time I get out I'll have to fish the terrestrials. I'm heading to the gorge on Thursday evening after work if you're interrestred.

I will be in touch... Thursday sounds like a good possibility.

I'm happy to report that I have caught fish on my last 4 outings on terrestrials, namely hoppers and crickets. Is anyone else still catching fish on them? I'm tying some various patterns up tonight for this Saturdays outing. I'll post results when I get back.

Fished today for wild browns w/crickets and ants (and a couple other patterns).
Caught fish on every fly, but the sinking black ant took the best fishes.
I would've fished some hoppers, but all my hoppers are shredded!

Good to hear they're working for you. I had zero luck fishing them last year. This year is the total opposite. Hopefully I can continue my terrestrial streak this weekend.

I was able to continue my streak of catching fish on a terrestrial to the past 5 outings. I fished a small stream in PA. I expected conditions to be less than favorable....which they were. Low, clear, but cold water produced only one little brown caught on a black flying ant.
