Sparkle emerger

FIN-ITE 34

Well-known member
For anyone that has trouble with the overbody on a sparkle pupa or emerger, I have three words, "The Book Mailer". I was watching a Grobert video, tying the sparkle emerger and I noticed that the antron material he was using for the overbody had an extremely fine denier. So I did some searching and came across this. LaFontaine Private Label - Sparkle Yarn

The stuff was cheap so I figured what the hell, give it a try. The yarn came in the mail yesterday and last night I set upon tying some sparkle emergers. I am still trying to figure out the best way to process the yarn for tying and maybe Grobert will weigh in on this, but I gotta' tell you that this stuff makes near perfect overbodies. I think that the fine denier of this antron yarn is the difference.

What would i search on Youtube or Vimeo? and did you just type in sparkle pupa and his video was there, or Grobert sparkle pupa?

Instead of tying the spakle pupa, try tying a brushed shuck emerger. This fly has the same effect as the sparkle but is much easier to tie. You can fish it deep or in the film or put a cdc wing on it instead of Antrim and fish it on top. It out produces all my other flies combined. I also like to put one turn of patridge before I tie in the wing. Deadly.

Great fly, it has been producing very well for me lately in brown and bright green, and brown and yellow. Cut the yarn into 2-3 inch long pieces, then using an eye lash comb, hold one end tight and comb out the fibers starting very close to the end and work your way up to where you are holding it. If you don't start near the end, the fibers bind. It only takes a few seconds and its worth it to get the results. They used to sell the fine antron in LaFontaine colors in bags like dubbing, which is what I used in the video. Sparkle yarn is a good substitute and is very fine, too. Here's what an eye lash comb looks like - get one that has metal teeth, the plastic ones stink, they break.

Thanks Matt. That is what I did, comb it out, only I used a piece of Velcro because I didn't have a comb with a fine enough tooth. I had seen the Danish pike guys comb out sculpin wool with what looked like a cat brush and was thinking along those lines, but I will look for an eye lash comb.

When you say brown I'm assuming you mean for the shuck, right? Does the shuck color every vary with certain types of caddis?

In his video, Matt uses the brown for the body and the yellow for the overbody. I would assume he uses the green for the overbody.

IMAG0603_1.jpgIMAG0600_1.jpgIMAG0602_1.jpgHers the recipe. Dubbing loop is beaver belly dubbing, chopped Antron clear, and a bit of gold slf. Body dubbed to match your favorite. I like olive or chocolate brown. Turn of patridge. Antron wings or cdc for fishing on top. Dubbed Antron head.

Brown and yellow sparkle pupa/emerger - light brown antron abdomen/body, golden yellow antron shuck/overbody, chocolate brown head/thorax - I use usually rabbit.
Brown and bright green pupa/emerger - bright green antron abdoemn/body, light olive antron shuck/overbody, chocolate brown head thorax.

During a good caddis hatch, its a good tactic to fish dry dropper - an appropriate caddis dry on top, with 12-18" of tippet off the bend with a sparkle emerger tied to it. Put a very small split shot 5-6" above the emerger.

i will pay american dollars if one of you two, Trico or Matt would like to tie up a dozen. 6 yellow and brown and 6 bright green/brown. I am also makeing up a shadow box with Salmon flies in them and would pay for a few different patterns.

Yeah, Book Mailer, what a joke! Guess this post caught me on an off night, seeing how two big named companies have gone again and shown how little they think of the "common man!"
So, Book Mailer huh? How in the world is it a good price when they charge SEVEN dollars for standard shipping?????

I was like you, I seen the price of sparkle yarn, $1.25, and thought I'd get a couple to a few packs.....get to check out and find that the shipping cost more than my dang order.

Tired of companies piggy backing and just hitting people where it hurts.

Well I figured that after computing time, gas and tolls to drive to MT, that seven bucks was a bargain.
FYI. I bought 9 colors. Each bag contains at least 3x what you get on a card anywhere else at a buck-sixty. So that's a $3.55 saving per pack. Times 9 packs = $31.95 - $7.00 shipping = $24.95 savings. Hell I made money on the deal and went out and bought a 24 pack.

Lolol, I'll give you that one. Can't argue there.
Sorry about the rant, had an incredibly bad day with a couple big name companies. My apologies.

I can do the caddis after this weekend, pretty busy. The salmon flies will take me a bit of time but u won't be disappointed. No need to pay me I'll enjoy tying them. I may come across as a dick sometimes but im really not.:)

That is very generous. But inwill compensate for your work. I consider those flies art, thus displaying them in a shadow box.
thanks again. P.s. imalways liked your flies betterbthan Groberts:)
