Southern NJ Fly Fishing (Trout)

Anyone have any recommendations on places to go near Mount Holly? Looking for something after work (coming from Philly) and on the weekends. Wish I was closer to NW NJ, but...gotta look for something around here until the market improves! ;)

Unfortunately there's nowhere down here that's practical right now. Come April 12 there's the Rancocas Creek SW branch in the Medford area that is stocked. It's about 10 min. from Mt Holly right down 541 S through Lumberton. Almost all stocked southern waters are ponds as you'll notice in the regs. The only other S Jersey stream stocked is the Maurice River in Salem county which is much further south. If you were going to drive down there you would be better off driving the same amount of time up to the SBR.
BTW just to clarify things a little, the Toms is in central Jersey, not S Jersey. A quick look at a state map will verify this for those who would argue the point. It's just as far from Toms to Cape May as it is from Toms to the Palisades.
Anyway, come April two other options for after work spots will be the Assunpink and Stony Brook creeks in Mercer County.

I too, like you, live in South Jersey. I live in West Berlin. Take Dave's advice and head north for the trout fishing. Or head out to Pennslyvania. Let me know if you want to tag along sometime. Your own my way north.

Central NJ?

Although Dave asserts that the Toms River is in "Central NJ", you must remember the cardinal law of location within NJ: (Homativity..related to relativity but dealing with the principle of perceived geographical reference based on distance from your nj postal location...of course having nothing to do with the term "going postal" all word-associations aside). No matter where I live in NJ, 10 miles or more "north" of me is "North Jersey" and 10 miles or more "south" of me is "South Jersey". There are some corollaries to this law: Shoretivity - which is if I live in "North Jersey" then any point South of the Raritan River is considered "The Shore". (Just for the readers reference, although completely tangential to this discussion is the concept of Philadelphity...of course being the annexation of NJ West of I295 to metro Philadelphia.)

Now, given the population densities, and recalling the Clintonian principle of popularity-makes-it-truth, then obviously Toms River is simultaneously in "South Jersey" and at "The Shore".

A true concept if ever there was one. However, being situated as I am in Camden County, based on the rules of relativity the Toms is definitely located in North Jersey. Anything above that is annexed to NYC without prejudice.
Fortunately for me I'm east of I295 and so am not a victim of Philadephiativity, though it is a near miss.
Having grown up in central Jersey (Mercer Co), living now in south Jersey (Camden Co) and spending 95% of my outdoor recreation in north Jersey (Hunterdon, Somerset, Warren and Sussex Co's) I've conditioned myself to consider the source when an area is referenced in a conversation.
All things considered, this state is a bit too small for so much "zoning". I think it's time to expand our borders. Whattaya say we pull 'eminent domain' on everything from Bucks to Wayne Co's in PA and Delaware, Sullivan, Ulster and Orange Co's in NY? We could use the space and we'd only have to buy one fishing license!:D
