Smallie Help

MNTrout

Yellowstone Cutthroat
I want to try fly fishing for smallies on the big D in Jersey or PA. If anyone could give me any tips on where to try wade fishing for them and the tactics you use it would be greatly appreciated.

You can email me @ tryg4@hotmail.com if you don't want to post.

I'll gladly go fishing with anyone who wants to have me tagging along asking Q's as well.

Thanks

When the water warms up and it becomes dangerous to the trout to fish for them is when I usually turn my attention over to the smallies on the D. I'm from Mercer County so I usually fish anywhere from the Scudders Falls area up through Bull's Island. Scudders, Lambertville (wing dam), Prallsville Mills (sp?) and Bull's Island all offer alot of wadeable areas that should keep you busy. I don't know much about points north of that.

As for techniques you can try poppers in riffles, but I've had most of my luck with DEEP stuff (hit the bottom-- if you're not losing lures, you're not deep enough).... heavily weighted Clousers and Wooly Bugger variations. White has been a good color choice over the years for me.

Anywhen from nowish through much of October (often w/ a grand finale toward the end of the season) is when you can expect them to be active. Look for small school-sized stripers to be mixed in.

MNT,

Don't know what part of the river you're most likely to fish... but the area around King Cole's eatery off of Route 46 upstream of Belvidere NJ is a great area for wading. All types of water... riffles, pools, islands.

Bring a good asst. of wooly buggers (olive), Clouser Minnows (cht/wht), large prince nymphs, and stimulators in case the morning surface action is going on (the stoneflies are very active right now).

Where is King Cole's?

I'm coming from Springfield, NJ off of 78.

Thanks for the info

MNT,

From route 78... you'll want to take 31 north, to 46 west. Follow 46 (along the Pequest River) for a couple miles. After the Pequest parts from the road start looking for King Coles on your left. You can't miss it as it's right where 46 turns due north and starts paralleling the Delaware River.

Park in the lot and cross over to the islands just downstream of the eatery above the first riffle.
