Salmon River Report 2011

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - ORWELL CREEK

What about me??? He takes a few photos with his Kodak instamatic and gets a beer? Im giving you actual information. I was in the water fishing, not taking pictures shooting the Bull with guys on the bridge.

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - ORWELL CREEK

WB,

You gonna be up there? of course I will...HAHA But, AK SKIM and I have been computer enemies for quite some time now...Would just be nice to show him im really not an asshole. LOL

Are you headed up this weekend?

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - ORWELL CREEK

... buy you a beer at the Altmar Hotel or Stefanos...

I don't know about that Simms.

See Chris who owns You Guy's Place she even said it to me on Saturday night...

YOU GUY'S PLACE THE OFFICIAL BAR OF AK SKIM ON THE SALMON RIVER,

Then reminded me I gave her place a "Two Corona Out of Three Rating"

DSCN4558-1.jpg

"Because she doesn't allow sleeping on the bar."

DSCN45541-1.jpg

She actually reminded this past weekend, I promised her after that post went up a
number of years ago; I would frame those photos and give them to her so she could
hang it up in the bar.

So by next Salmon Season... I have to get it to her.

Soooooo... next time we are both up there, I'll buy you a cold beer.

HAHA! That is great!!

Ok, well it's a deal. I will up there pretty regularly now that chrome domes are beginning to eattttttt!

I was in the picture of the lower fly zone. Third one up on the right from the guy with the floppy hat and oversized waders that was struggling to cast an indicator rig. Had you waited, till i moved in where he was and you could have had a picture of a more distinguished fly fisherman. Heck, I may even buy a tweed jacket and get a pipe.

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - ORWELL CREEK

What about me???

What about you???

Now correct me if I am wrong.

Most people who fish the "Mighty" Delaware wouldn't even think of of lowering their standards
and fishing the Salmon River.

Who by the way, is more of a blue collar kind of a river than those snots who show up on the
banks of the Delaware River with a premo drift boat, and ascots.

Just lucky Simms doesn't have to buy you a white wine of some kind, because I don't think you
would go for drinking it out of a paper cup; and no chamber music playing in the background,
all the while sitting out on the veranda.

Well, we'll just have to take WB in for a cold gold at Pulaski Pizza...A beautiful, well kept , sanitary:puking-smiley:, and accomodarting:nose-picking: restaurant in the heart of the megalopolis, Pulaksi, NY... I hope you enjoy Natty Ice in dixie cups....

NJDrew.... thats the dude with the funky cowboy fishing hat.

Yeah... go out and buy a cowboy hat like his.

1. your wrong, so there you are corrected
2. I have no standards. I post on this site so that should prove that.
3. It not an ascot but a bandanna
4. To me "beer" is any white wine that sells for $20 a bottle or less
5. I do have a cowboy hat. (wife make me wear it to bed once a year)

Stefanos is great...After a long day on the water or a long day on the sleds, they have some great food... As for the ponderosa, I've been there once..about 17 years ago...Im not a fan...

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - ORWELL CREEK

not much of a fan either. It is half a notch up from fast food. All the professional eaters from the town show up there to fill up on the buffet. But after a long cold day I am past the point of caring. where else do you eat there?

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - ORWELL CREEK

We have a camp (on country route 48) so no other place holds a candle to us. HAHA

But Stefanos is one of the best their...Country pizza was good until it became Pulaski Pizza...BUT, if you have a few minutes, take a rip down Rt. 13 into Williamstown (15-20 min), at BUCKS...Right next to the nice'n'sleezy. They have GREAT GREAT FOOD and GREAT WINGS! Its our number 1 stop when on the sleds...owners are fishermen/sled friendly too!!!

There is a place just south of trestle north that serves breakfast/lunch...(the newish looking cabins on south side of the road..).Not sure about this season, but in Salmon season they are hoping!

Thankfully C&M closed. That place was HORRID.

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - March 25. 2011

I presently have about 15 articles in the can so far that I plan on putting out one or two a week till the dam has their white water release this summer.

One of those articles I think would interest you two....

Restaurant's in Pulaski and Altmar.

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - March 25. 2011

yes it would interest me. I do like the burgers at Ak bar in Altmar

I just hope he does not take it in the bathroom with him. He had to show me the chili on the way in, I don't want to see it on the way out

ak do you fish or is that camera glued to your hand? you have pictures of everything man good way to keep memories

I have 149 CD's full packed with fly fishing photos.

Not bad since I only had a digital camera when I went to the Smokies in 2007.

Stefano's is awesome. I love the wings and the girls arent that bad either who work there.

You got that right.... we ride the sleds their for dinner and frequent it during the fishing seasons...No other place holds a candle to them in the area...

Now, the altmar hotel, they give you more fries than an army can eat and the burgers are dandy...

Got a text from up there a few minutes ago, the weather yesterday was in the 50's and rain , an inch of fresh snow fell over night, at 1030 in the 30's right now.

Crazy weather.

Dam release; Until 11:59 PM Thu APR 07, 750 CFS

Pineville gage in the past 24 hours has gone up 500 cfs to 1,570 cfs

I have been busy with other projects and let the Salmon River Report slip for a few day.

My apologies.

As reported yesterday they had a dusting of snow over night of an inch so it is not going to have that much of an effect so the dam release remains at 750 cfs till midnight Thursday, April 7th.

DSCN1435.jpg

Height 7.04 feet

Yesterday around noon the flow rate in Pineville read about 1,900 cfs and has been on a steady drop since.

DSCN1436.jpg

At 0815 the reading was 1.330 cfs.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report for Wednesday, April 6th.

On Tuesday we had a wintry mix of rain and wet snow showers along with windy conditions. In the morning we had heavy rain showers and the temperature was in the 40's, by late morning the temperature dropped into the low 30's and the rain changed over to wet snow showers. Were still dealing with melting snow coming off Tug Hill and along with the recent rain we have plenty of runoff. The hatchery is now open and if you get the opportunity stop by and check out the number of steelhead holding in the fish ladder and Beaver Dam Brook, it's very impressive. The Upper Fly Fishing area is now open and anglers have reported getting into a mix of steelhead and browns with egg patterns producing the best results. Anglers have been getting into browns in the softer water along the edges and getting into steelhead in the deep water drop offs around the gravel areas. Anglers staying in the motel reported getting into fish in the Upper & Lower Fly Fishing Area, below the Altmar bridge, Wire Hole and Ellis Cove. For those anglers who are fly fishing, egg patterns, black stoneflies and woolly buggers have produced the best results. For those anglers float fishing or bottom bouncing with spin gear, egg sacs, trout beads, pink worms and night crawlers have all produced steady results.

DSR Report for Tuesday, April 5th.

The rain keeps coming down and the river is rising fast! If you have plans to visit
the area in the next few days keep a close eye on the conditions. The
tributaries are going out of their banks ,but should have fresh spring fish when
they come
down.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report for Thursday, April 7th

On Wednesday we had spring like conditions with plenty of sunshine and the temperature reached into the mid 40's. Considering the amount of rain we recently got and melting snow coming off the Tug Hill, the river is in good shape. In the afternoon the Upper Fly Fishing Area and did well fishing egg patterns under a strike indicator along the inside seams of faster water.

The hatchery is now open and if you get the opportunity stop by and check out the number of steelhead holding in the fish ladder and Beaver Dam Brook, it's very impressive.

Anglers have been getting into browns in the softer water along the edges and getting into steelhead in the deep water drop offs around the gravel areas.

For those anglers who are fly fishing, egg patterns, black stoneflies and woolly buggers have produced the best results.

Pineville gage @ 1215 today is 1,150 cfs and continues to slide downward.

I'll be heading up tomorrow for a day trip. Probably will start off on some tribs and may end up on the river, most likely DSR. I'm heading up locked and loaded! Beulah switch for tribs with sucker spawns and size 12 egg patterns & two 8wt spey rods for the river - I'm looking forward to trying out my newest pattern, my epoxy spoon tube flies. They looks awesome on the swing, hopefully they induce a strong grab, if not, then back to the regular tubes and streamers.

The best thing about tomorrows trip is I can finally put away the Simms Exstream bootfoots......they are the best winter waders ever made, but I miss my stockingfoots.

Salmon River Report for Sunday April 10th

Dam release of 750 cfs until 11:59 PM today, Sun, April 10th

Pineville gage has dropped steady for the past 4 days, at 0115 this morning reading of 1,080 cfs @ 6.78 feet.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report April 10th

Saturday was another mild day with plenty of sunshine and the temperature reached into the upper 60's. With the mild weather the fishing pressure has increased which is normal for the weekend. We got mixed reports from anglers, some groups did very well, while others had a slow day. The majority of steelhead are still spawning but each day anglers are getting into a few drop backs in the Schoolhouse, Trestle Pool, Sportsman Pool, Papermill, Town Pool, Staircase, Black Hole and the DSR. In the mid to upper end of the river anglers are getting into steelhead in the deep water dropoffs around the gravel areas.

DSR Report from April 8th. 1:27 pm

The water is starting to warm up and the fish are back on the bite. I spoke to several anglers that did very good on the run yesterday and today. The Glide, Flats, Joss and Meadow all fished well. Flies, beads, worms and eggs all are producing fish. We are seeing a few atlantics and spring browns in the mix.

Stay out of the tribs, spawners in there, let them do their thing :)

Thanks for the advice Simms, you don't have to worry about policing me on the water. FYI - Steelhead this time of year on the SR & any LO trib are pre/active/post spawners. Even the steelhead you were fishing for last weekend. :) Now fishing for steelhead on their beds? Well that should go without saying, so no need to say it.

AK - It was a day trip only during lit hours, if there was a big burn near your castle, I missed it and the smoke rings

While I didn't get anything on the swing, the run below the 2a bridge is so awesome to throw a skagit through, spent about 2 hours just going through it one time (quarter mile). My buddy landed a brown and steel using a dryline scandi setup. It is great swinging this time of year. Get ready, once these fish start dropping back, they will be grabbing everything big and ugly! Can't wait to go back up and hit some of the runs in the DSR as the fish drop.

DSR Report for April 11th. 11:17 am-

The warmer weather has started to turn the spring fish on. Anglers reported good action over the weekend and that has continued today. We are seeing higher water, but that should help bring in more fresh fish from the lake. Fly anglers that were swinging big zonkers and buggers said the fish were much more aggressive now that the water is warming up. Eggs, beads and egg patterns along with pink worms are still producing.
