Whitakers Fly Shop Report
Sunday, September 25th

Saturday was another warm and muggy day with scattered rain showers in the morning and the temperature was in the 70's.

Anglers staying in the motel who fished the DSR reported having a slow day with not much fish movement, a few kings and cohos were caught in some of the deeper holes.

Anglers stopping into the shop reported getting into kings and cohos in the Town Pool, Ballpark Papermill and Clarks Falls. The mid to upper section of river has fish holding in the deeper holes such as Sportsman Pool, Pineville, Trestle Pool and Schoolhouse.

Yesterday afternoon anglers staying in the motel who fished the Lower Fly Fishing Area reported getting into a mix of kings and cohos.

After Simms' latest report from the SR, even Whitaker is being very careful about their reporting.

You expect some hedging in the reports, after all they only have a few months to carry them the rest
of the year.

Early season is always tough, a few come in the run is on, until you get there and ... What happened ???

Few years ago I would read or someone would call in the morning stating they were in and I would pack up and
leave the office for a long weekend. Too many times only get up there and hear, you should have been here Tuesday...

Soon as more NEFF members get up there and the honest fishing reports will start coming in.

Until then....

There is always the Cemetery Pool in the LFZ, if need to have your photo taken holding a fish,
just spend an hour there and you will get your hero shot. Get there early the prime logging spots will already have
someone standing there a couple of hours or so before sun rise.

Good post AK. This certainly is a delayed year up there for the Kings. As far as coho, it was been a banner run for them, but you know how coho are, they come in big crazy spurts, then they are gone. This is the first season I can say I have hands down hooked into, and/or landed more coho than King. I'm taking my brother up on Wednesday the 28th. It'll probably be my lasty trip up for during salmon season, I can only take so much of watching the liners. When we planned this trip, I assumed the run would be half over based on previous years fishing. If we are lucky, the 2nd big run of the year will take place then. The fish are supposedly stacking the estuary and I hope they will hold off a few more days. This certainly is the time of year to fish the DSR, when they are fresh and furious.

Bring on the 3rd week of October!!! I'm keep tying more and more egg patterns type flies, I need to use them!

WHITAKERS FLY SHOP REPORT FOR MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 26th
On Sunday the hot and humid weather continued with blue skies, plenty of sunshine and the temperature reached near 80 degrees. Anglers staying in the motel who fished the DSR reported a slow start with a few kings and cohos in the mid section of the run. Late in the afternoon once the crowd thinned out, conditions improved with some kings on the move. Over the weekend we got some movement of fish between the deep holes, but overall the majority of action was in and around the deeper holes. The Town Pool, Papermill, Sportsman Pool, Trestle Pool, Schoolhouse and Lower Fly Fishing Area were all holding fish over the weekend.

There has been a whole lot of nothing coming out of Pulaski this week.
The early push was just that, fish that have not made it to the hatchery or fly zones are still holding in the deeper areas of the river.

WHITAKERS FLY SHOP REPORT FOR Sept. 28th
Tuesday was another hot and humid day with cloudy conditions and the temperature reached near 80 degrees. The good news is that colder weather is expected for the upcoming weekend. Anglers staying in the motel who fished the DSR reported a steady movement of kings along with a few cohos in the mix. The anglers we spoke with had the most action in the mid to lower section of the run. Anglers stopping into the shop reported a mix of kings and cohos holding in the Black Hole and Town Pool. But with the cloudy conditions these fish were slowly moving through the Staricase and Ballpark. In the upper end of the river anglers reported fish holding in the Sportsman Pool, Trestle Pool and Schoolhouse. The anglers we spoke with who fished the Upper Fly Fishing Area reported getting into some cohos and a few kings.

SUGGESTED PATTERNS:

Re: Salmon River Report WX 14-16 Sept

Saturday the Chinooks arrived in force and I was there.

For once I was in the right place at the right time for what was an avalanche of fish.

I am pleased.

I don't know what else to say, so I'll just sit here and continue smiling.

THats great to hear, Dennis!

I will be up Wed night thur Monday, prime goon season!

While I would love to move our yearly "gala" back a few weeks into prime chrome season, the majority of the group, being in their 40s/50/60's, are beginning to become WHIMPY in their old age, therefore, would rather keep it on C-day weekend, as its more "temperate"... I get so much fishing in anyway, it doesn't really bother me. Its just a time to shoot the shit and tip back a few beers around the campfire, if nothing else. Catching fish is just a bonus.

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - Where am I ?

Test.

I haven't been able to open this thread in over a week.

Thanks DC great job.

Was up to the Salmon River over Columbus Day Weekend, words cannot express what it was like up there.

Great time so very glad I went.

This weekend I am in Greenville, Maine on the Kennebec River, when I get backnext week I hope to put up some reports.

Till then tight lines.

PS

SR is still flowing at 417 cfs, had a spike to 550 cfs last night, lets hope it was enough to bring more fish in from the lake.

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - Where am I ?

The spike was a quick one to un-lodge a tree stuck at the dam.....

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - Where am I ?

They have been getting some rain in the river which is good, there was a push of chrome yesterday I hear. The rain will get things moving. Hopefully the rain hit tug hill too so the reservoirs fill up.

ONE MORE MONTH AND I'LL BE HOME!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. This not fishing is brutal!

Looking forward to it Chris!

New bridge looks good (I never saw the old one). Walked over it last weekend to fish just above it, some nice water.

swung up some steel in the ufz yesterday. hooked 3, all too hot to handle (just working the bugs out for november?). had one take me down the entire rapids and another pin the leader to a rock. wont ever hear me complain about losing fish that battle; thrilling jumps and runs are always a win (though i was a bit gassed by the time i hit paradise).

The DSR Report from this past Thursday, October 27th. 10:42 am
Fishing is still really good even though we have a lot of leaves. Egg sacs are working best because of the leaves,
but beads and flies are still catching fish.

Whitakers Fly Shop Report for Friday, October 28th
Please check the waterline for the latest update. Thursday was a cold day with cloudy conditions and the temperature reached 40 degrees, the overnight low is expected to be in the mid 20's. This may not be your favorite water level, but the river is fishable and anglers are fishing. We got mixed reports from anglers, some groups did very well, while others had a tough day adjusting to the water conditions. The anglers who have the most experience fishing high water conditions had the most success. The upper section of river still has salmon spawning in the gravel areas. The lower end of the river continues to produce steelhead action with anglers getting into fresh chrome on a daily basis. Anglers stopping into the shop reported getting into fish in the DSR, Staircase/Longbridge, RT2A, Lower Trestle, Schoolhouse Pool, Wire Hole, Upper and Lower Fly Fishing Area.

SUGGESTED PATTERNS:
  • Estaz eggs in pink, purple, chart, orange and blue, size 4.
  • Comets in pink, purple, chart, black, white and orange, size 2.
  • Egg sucking leeches in black w/red head or purple w/pink head, size 2-6.
  • Woolly buggers in black, olive peacock and brown, size 2-6.
  • Glo-bugs in pink, chart, orange, blue and oregon cheese, size 4-8.
  • Flesh Fly, size 4.
  • Bunny leeches in black, purple, pink. size 2-6.
  • Steelhead stone in orange, red and purple, size 6.

DSR NEWS - November 5th. 10:47 am

It is a beautiful day on the run, but the fishing has slowed compared the past few days. It seems a lot of those fish moved up river and we are waiting for the next big push. Anglers are still having action, just not as hot and heavy as it was.

Starting this sunday we will open at 6a.m and close at 5p.m

PLEASE SEE THE SPECIAL NOTE BELOW REGARDING THE FUTURE OF THE DSR.

NOTE:

I am writing this to inform all of our customers, staff, neighbors and friends know that Melissa and I have decided
to take another position on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. We have spent a lot of time weighing this decision and have come to
the conclusion that it is the best thing for our family. On behalf of our family, we would like to personally thank all of you for your patronage, support, friendships and loyalty during our timehere.

We have come to feel like the Douglaston is a home and everyone that spends time here has become an extended family. We have seen many changes on the run over the past several seasons and with your help, the property continues to grow towards being the premier destination for salmon, steelhead and brown trout. It is our hope that you will continue to help preserve DSR for future generations.

Even though we are leaving, we will continue to promote and support the DSR staff, owners and customers in any way we can. All of you can rest assure that Doug Barclay and his family are committed to continue the growth and improvement of the Douglaston Salmon Run. He is also committed to find a qualified individual to manage the Douglaston Salmon Run for the future. He and I will work closely on the decision so that the transition can be as seamless as possible. In the short term, it will be business as usual. The same dedicated staff will open and close and the reports will remain up to date and fresh on the web and our social media avenues.

Many of you have commented on the popularity of our new facebook and twitter pages for updates. Not only will these continue to grow and be utilized, but you will see a new more interactive web page this year, better photo galleries and a beautiful state of the art welcome center in the main parking area. Final design is being worked on for both of these projects as we speak, and by next season you will see these changes take place. What won’t change with our leaving are the fine staff, beautiful water and unmatched fishing opportunity that all of you have come to love on the DSR. All of these things will still greet you upon every visit and be waiting for your much anticipated return.

For those of you that reside in Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware and Philadelphia, I am taking a regional director position with the National Wild Turkey Federation for that area. I hope that we will still see many of you at banquets and events in those areas. For those of you that don’t reside there, I hope you will still keep in touch and hold a place for me in the Upper Clay in the fall and spring so that we may meet again on the water.
Tight Lines,
Jason , Melissa & Family

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report
Just a reminder about daylight savings time and turning the clock back. Yesterday was a cold day with a mix of sun and clouds and the temperature was in the 40's. The majority of anglers we spoke with reported having another good day while getting into steelhead from top to bottom. With the low water, nice weather and good fishing, it's no surprise the fishing pressure has increased, especially on the weekend. The upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville continues to get the most fishing pressure. Anglers in the Upper and Lower Fly Fishing Area have been getting into steelhead along with a few kings on a daily basis. The lower end of the river continues to produce fresh chrome on a daily basis for those anglers willing to cover water and would be a good bet if your trying to avoid other anglers. Anglers stopping into the shop reported getting into fish in the DSR, Staircase/Longbridge, Lower Trestle, Schoolhouse Pool, Wire Hole, Upper and Lower Fly Fishing Area. For those anglers who are fly fishing, dead drifting egg patterns along the bottom or under a strike indicator has been very productive throughout the river.

SUGGESTED PATTERNS:
  • Estaz eggs in pink, purple, chart, orange and blue, size 4.
  • Sucker Spawn in pink, oregon cheese, chart, blue, orange, size 8.
  • Egg sucking leeches in black w/red head or purple w/pink head, size 2-6.
  • Woolly buggers in black, olive peacock and brown, size 2-6.
  • Glo-bugs in pink, chart, orange, blue and oregon cheese, size 4-8.
  • Flesh Fly, size 4.
  • Bunny leeches in black, purple, pink. size 2-6.
  • Steelhead stone in orange, red and purple, size 6.

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - Where am I ?

Just got back from two day trip in the upper fly stretch. Tons of great fish! Project healing waters was fishing the hatchery so some of the steelhead where being flush back up to us. However, no shortage of fishermen most using pink/white egg patterns under indicator.

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - Where am I ?

I'm heading up there tomorrow and staying till Friday mid-day.
Can anyone recommend some places to eat in Pulaski besides Eddy's and the pizza place next door to Eddy's?

Thanks in advance,

Pete

If you go South on 81 there is that Diner in Parish that is really good. Coming from Pulaski you'll have to go left when you get off the exit and then go left like you're headed to get back on Northbound for 81. You can also try You guys place up in Altmar (are they still open Ak?) Hmm...always the Ponderosa.

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - Where am I ?

I had a decent meal at the altmar hotel the other night, but I'm sure you've been there and have an opinion of the place by now

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - Where am I ?

Never been to the Altmar Hotel, how is it? Is that the place behind Melinda's?

I think I had a burger and fries there once.

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - Where am I ?

I thought it was pretty good, and good prices. After a long day out there though I'm anything but picky. I would recommend the place, had a good chat with a few other fly guys in there too.

It's a little bit of a drive out of town, maybe 15-20 mins, but the Eis House in Mexico, NY is very good.

Restaurant Mexico NY ( New York ) Arena's Eis House Restaurant

Right in Pulaski the River House is pretty good, sometimes a little hit or miss, but decent.

RiverHouse Restaurant

I still miss the pizza & wings at the old Pulaski Country Pizza (now Eddy's Place). Kind of a shame how Stefano's built right next to them and ran them out of town.
