Looking forward to fishing with you this year. Now that I'm a retired guy, I find I'm busier than ever, but I have one thing I didn't have before.....I can now choose the things that keep me busy.:D

Rick:

I tied up a whole bunch of your favourite coloured egg patterns just for YOU !

We'll need to meet up this fall so I can give them to you.

Regards,

AK Skim

Re: Douglaston Salmon Run 2008/2009 Season

This evening I have good news.

The Douglaston Salmon Run has offered me a 2008/2009 seasonal pass.

I cannot tell you how happy I am at this moment.

AK Skim

Well, there goes the neighborhood.

AK, if you see someone on the season pass holder's line with a Loomis spey and a Tibor Riptide, be sure to say hello.

DSR RULES & REGULATIONS:

An exaggerated lift at the end of a presentation produces foul hooked fish and a pattern of this is not acceptable.

Excessive foul hooking of fish will not be tolerated.

All foul hooked fish should be immediatiely broken off to prevent unnecessary harm.

All access to and from river by parking lot and trail system only.

Roadside parking is not allowed on Lake Street before opening time.

Gate locked before dark as posted.

Each minor (17 & under) must have an adult to supervise him/her.

Children 15 & under will be issued a complimentary access pass, provided that each is accompanied by an adult at all times.

Access permits should be visible and attached at all times.

NO: fires, littering, fish cleaning, tree cutting, overnight parking, camping, alcohol, controlled substances, weapons, or pets will be permitted on the property at any time.

All private property rights of Douglaston Salmon Run and its neighbors will be enforced. We reserve the right to deny access to, or remove anyone from the property at anytime.

Please, for your safety, we strongly urge all fisherman to wear cleats/korkers and polarized fishing glasses.

An exaggerated lift at the end of a presentation produces foul hooked fish and a pattern of this is not acceptable.

If this was enforced more, you would see alot less people fishing the DSR. I have seen guides(will not mention names) using this technique. Could not believe my eyes.

The property that the DSR will be patrolling this year as reported by Corndog two weeks ago has changed from previous years.

In the past DSR both sides of the river from the Rt. 3 bridge the lower end of the river, where the fish first enter the river from the Estuary in Port Ontario up to the tail at the glide.

Upstream from there the DSR controls the south side of the river up to Coho St.

The new areas they are in control of will be both sides of the river from the gas line at the tail out of the Little Black Hole upstream to the waste plant.

From there up we will still control only the south side to Coho St.

People that stayed at any of the homes from the gas line down stream to the DSR property line there should be no concern other than you will need to have a DSR pass to go up or down stream.

That entire bank from the waste plant down is private property and will be patrolled by the DSR River Keepers.

If anyone has any further questions please feel free to call Jason at DSR (315)532-5060.

DSR is having new maps printed for the 2008 season showing the changes.

Tk is right.

I've watched many guides (and I could name names) teach their clients the exaggerated lift technique. Two of my friends went with a guide last year and the guide got mad when they wouldn't do it. I had one guide justify it by telling me he has to get his clients into fish even if they are foul hooked.

I know that noone here at NEFF is a SNAGGER, but most people that go to the SR think that's the only way to catch salmon.

Did you talk to Jason personally? He seems to be a pretty nice guy on the phone.

Every once and a while you'll come across someone who knows what they want to do and how they are going to do it.

If you look closely, you can see the gill net they are holding across the river. A ranger told me years back that they don't mess with the locals, they and their families have to live (survive) up there with them.

First Pic: Awww...that tree hanging over the river on the south side is a dead giveaway.

Second Pic: That one has me stumped. It's either the chute on the south side of the island above the Tresle Pool, the high water diversion below the Schoolhouse Pool, or Orwell Brook. I know I've seen it before.

You are correct... Orwell Creek on Centerville Road.

Reason I picked this particular photo, if you look closely you will notice it is not really in focus.

Reason why it is not in focus... one may assume that I was in a drift boat with NEFF's own 1996 Yale Rowing Champion TK Hour.

Yes, difficult at best to take a decent photo when traveling down river at warp speed.

Put in at Altmar, and was at the Ball Park 32.7 minutes later.
We made that trip six times that day.

PS
Did I mention that TK rowed back up stream each time...???

Duglaston Salmon Run Opening Day Report 8.16.08

Opening Day brought beautiful weather and a few fish. We had three kings reported and two steelhead.

This morning is another clear one with clears skies and 59 degrees.

The water remains at 750cfs plus some run off. Water Temp yesterday was 69 degrees.

Captains are finally reporting good catches of salmon off of both Oswego and the Salmon River.

IMPORTANT REMINDER!! This year we have offered 100 daily passes on line. You can purchase these passes ahead of time for the days of your trip. By purchasing these ahead of time you will have guaranteed access on your dates. These passes are going quickly. If you are planning a trip to the DSR this coming season please click on get your pass.

Also this season we will no longer be utililizing the DSR Hotline for daily updates. With the continuing growth of the internet and lets not forget AK Skim's daily report! we have experienced very few calls to the line. We will have daily updates posted here under Current Conditions.

George just reported on salmoncrazy that he saw 2 oids in the ladders.

Also, SQ reported that she smoked 2 steelies :( and 6 oids for customers already.

AK...my first guess would be the north side of the Compactor. But, you didn't give me much to go on. Don't tell me where it is if I'm wrong.

New to this forum, but I figured I'd tell everyone what they might already know. We're catching Salmon and Browns in 120-100 foot of water at 95 feet down. Action was good this week, although today and late yesterday the lake got a little nasty. They called for 2-4 mph winds. Not sure where they were talking about. Had 5-6 foot rollers on the lake when I came off. Both the Oswego and Salmon Rivers are flowing nicely. Hopefully this weather and water keeps up the way it has been. Already reports of fish being caught at the route 3 bridge area in the estuary. Douglaston's parking lot was empty, so I'm not sure if they have even opened up yet. Then again I'm not a big fan of having to pay to fish, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Hopefully we get a big run early, so I can get my fill before all the out of staters make their way in. Well good luck to everyone and tight lines and happy trails.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report

For August 17, 2008

Not much too report at this point, but over the weekend it was warm and dry with plenty of sunshine.

The Douglaston Salmon Run is now open and had a great turn out opening day.

Overall it's been a wet summer and we've had good water levels.

We will start updating the fishing report once fish start entering the river on a daily basis.

Welcome CTobias to NEFF and look forward to reading more of your reports.

DSR August 17th.

Was another beautiful late summer day. Clear skies 72 degrees. The water was again at 750cfs plus run off.

We had 15 folks on the river fishing.

The were a few kings seen and one nice brown trout caught.

This morning the water has dropped to 335cfs so we are looking forward to a report from this morning.

For the Salmon River at Brookfield Renewable Power's Lighthouse Hill Dam, Altmar, NY. The following predictions are for flows in the river just below the powerhouse unless otherwise noted.

Information about the timing of water level changes downstream of the powerhouse is included after the forecast.

Recent precipitation has allowed reservoir and flow conditions to return to more normal levels. Please. note this change in the following forecast.

Until 9:00 PM Fri AUG 22, 185 CFS

185!!! I heard that the water is about 2" from spilling over the dam.

Could it be that the dam authority is working with the fisheries to regulate better flows during the salmon run, so we don't have another fiasco like last year???

Okay...I think I've got it!

I had to download the pic and zoom in a bit. Looking at the highth of the trees, the high bank in the background, the ripples on the water, the tall dead tree left of center, the tree stump leaning out over the river just right of center, the angle of the sun hitting the trees, and small douglas fur left of center...it must be the north bank downstream of the iron bridge.
