Salmon River Report 2007

I just go back for the Salmon River, The fish (an amount worth fishing for anyway) aren't even up to the ball field yet. Just as many fish going back as there is coming in. Coho started today. I saw about 50 in the DSR this morning all running back to the lake.

I lost one king this morning- one of those hold then spit deals. I was "ethical fishing". I saw about 25 hook-ups and 600 fishermen in 2 days on the DSR. Do the math. There are relatively few fish in the river now.

Just a Comment on the Present Conditions

As much as we all want to be up on the Salmon River standing in the stream up to our waist and casting our flies to pods and pods of King's and Coho's.

In 2001 it wasn't until the end of September when the fishing picked up when the weather turned wet.

Granted, we will need almost a foot or so of rain to get the reservoir up to the level that may allow the flow rates to get up and above 355 cfs.

Don't know about you guy's, I am using the time to tie more flies that I don't really need, but it beats pacing the floor while watching the weather channel.

As always, this weekend finding a trout stream where no one else was there!

AK Skim

PS. #16 Wulff this time of year is a killer.

It's funny when I hear people tell a story and say, "Yeah, it was right in the mouth". You and I both know that that's where it should be......right in the mouth. You know too that you've snagged a salmon in it's ass end and pulled it in backwards just for the fight and maybe even kept it? I've done it all years ago as a kid and whenever I told a story and said, "Right in the mouth", I felt PRIDE in

that statement even though it's suppose to be in the mouth....legally by NYS fishing regulations. For the longest time and from learning from the wrong people, I thought that salmon didn't bite and that you had to snag them or force feed them. A close family member taught me with a green Jensen egg and I was good.....damn good. I got so good he'd say to his friend, "Watch this, she's gonna get one".....and I would.....right in the mouth. But now it's different. I've graduated to that final stage of being a good angler and that is by not sight fishing even though it still temps me until this day, but to cast, let it drift, and let the salmon bite.......bite my fly right down it's throat.....or the side of it's mouth....I'll take that too! This Coho Salmon did exactly just that. It saw the angler's fly (our lodging guest and shop customer) and WHACKED IT!!! It's a great hook set and this is what kind of "Right in the mouth I'm looking for now-a-days". It's true....salmon do bite and will bite hard. You just gotta know where to fish for them, what to use, and how to do it. This is what we're here for if you'd like to learn, stop in our shop and we'll show you what flys are working and/or bait. We'll tell you what kind of line you should be using and how many split shot to use. Or, the best way is to hire us and we'll take you out on the river and show you exactly what you need to know in order to hook and land your own salmon. Wouldn't it be great to tell your own salmon story and say with definite pride and legal affirmation as in the fishing regulations way, "RIGHT IN THE MOUTH!!!"???

Douglaston Salmon Run Report for 9/18/07
A good mix of kings and cohos moved throught the DSR today, fishing pressure was moderate.

The water level is at 100 cfs. Water temperature was 62 at noon.

Whitaker's Fly Shop

Please check the waterline for the latest update and continue to do the rain dance (wonder where they got that idea from??). On Tuesday we had blue skies again with plenty of sunshine and anglers took advantage of the opportunity to go fishing. Despite the difficult conditions, anglers we've spoken with are still glad to be here and have done a great job at keeping a positive attitude given the conditions. As of recently we've had some cooler weather which has helped lower the water temperature. With the low water conditions the fish that are around have been spooky and slow moving upstream while the majority of action continues to be in the lower end of the river. Areas like the DSR, Black Hole, Staircase, Town Pool and Ball Park are where the majority of anglers are fishing. The Douglaston Salmon Run reported a good mix of kings and cohos throughout the DSR under moderate fishing pressure.

Yankee Fly Shop SALMON RIVER FISHING REPORT: 9-19-07

Let's get something straight: The Salmon River in Pulaski NY is not "CLOSED". (Lads, those that have/had been married a while know that tone... time for me to go out and mow the lawn... if you know what I mean. AKS)

Now let's not freak out and misunderstand what's being said because the news stations sure are putting a scare into people out there and it's completely unnecessary. The Lower Fly Fishing Only Zone in Altmar, NY was recently closed on September 15 due to the fact that we have low water in the Salmon River along with the water temperatures a bit warm as well. There were a lot of Skamania Steelhead with a mix of Atlantic Salmon & Brown Trout sitting above the bridge in Altmar in the Lower Fly Fishing Only Zone. The NYS DEC and the Salmon River Fish Hatchery chose to temporarily close that (small section) so the fish that were there would naturally spawn and not be hooked and played by anglers which, with the weather & water conditions, could quite possibly kill the fish. So, is this really a big deal? Not really. There's other places to fish and the Salmon River is NOT CLOSED!!! You can fish 12 miles of the river for free. Now, onto another thing......yes the river level is low and running at 100 cfs (cubic feet per second), however, there are Coho Salmon & King Salmon, Skamania Steelhead, Washington Steelhead, along with some really nice Brown Trout that are coming into the river on a DAILY basis. I don't have time to upload all of my pictures since I"m busy in the shop. All I can tell you is this: "THE SALMON ARE RUNNING AND THE SEASON IS NOW", "THE FISHING IS GREAT AND THE CATCHING IS A MATTER OF OPINION AND OF LEVEL/SKILL/TYPE OF ANGLER/ETC" If you want to catch salmon the time is now and will be until November. Do Salmon bite? YES!!! Can you catch a salmon? It's possible however we strongly suggest hiring a guide if you're a first timer or unfamiliar with the area. Do we lie to you to get you up here? ABSOLUTELY NOT! How do you know? Well, for those who DO know us, you just know.....we don't lie or B.S. anyone because we wouldn't want it done to us. We give reports based on people's skill level, etc. New this year, we give (detailed) reports to shop customers only. Why? Because we want to help those who help us by coming to our shop and supporting us.

Just got back last night. Arrived Sunday night, hit the lower river for a few hours, had one hook up and saw a few. Monday had some hook ups in the morning and landed one fresh king. Tuesday, back in the lower river landed my first 2 coho's and fought a lot more! What a blast:) Wednesday only a few hours to fish had one got hook up but threw the hook, and saw a lot of coho's that looked spooked. I would cast above them and as soon as they saw my fly or leader they would head down river. About five minutes later they would come back, another cast with the same result. Decided to leave them alone. Time to go home anyway.

flyman,
I've seen the same with the hos. It's amazing how quickly those fish will become line/fly/weight shy. They couldn't have been in the river more than a few days at the most.

AK,
Did you see the waterline today? Their keeping it at 100cfs for another week. The rumors of 60cfs are just that.

Not much change on Wednesday, another day of full sun and most anglers we spoke with reported slower conditions then the previous few days. This is what I'm hearing and seeing from our shop customers, lodging guests, and guides. There's "Tons of Steelhead" in the Salmon River. The only problem is this: There's tons on stringers too! Some of the anglers out fishing on the Salmon River don't even know what kind of fish they have. It's amazing. One guy saw an angler with 2 steelhead on his stringer and the law is only one. The way to tell the difference between a steelhead and a coho salmon since they can both be very silver, is this: a steelhead's inside mouth will be all milky white and a coho salmon's will be white and black. It's a good idea to know what you're catching and also to read your regulations booklet. It's a shame most don't. Oh well....that's the difference between a true angler and a lazy "I just wanna catch whatever" angler. So, back to the steelhead....there are some really good numbers and the experienced anglers I spoke with today said that they were very suprised to see so many. They said they couldn't tell whether or not they were Skamania Steelhead or Washington Steelhead however they knew for a fact they were steelhead. They're gobbling up everything from egg patterns to a variety of bug patterns. In this picture, Tom Kelly from VA is holding a real pretty male. You can also see the two lamprey eel marks on the fish. Man, those damn things. I'd hate to be a fish and have something stuck to my side like that. Must be terrible. Okay, so that's my report. My guides tell me the bite in the mouth of the Salmon River NY is on one minute, off the next, then on. It's weird. The lake is still doing good and the numbers are moving closer and closer. The fish continue to keep coming into the Salmon River so for all of you that think it's not good fishing, you're wrong! Yeah, there's low water, but until there's NONE, then .......well, there won't be any fish. Tonight I took a video out back to prove this and by tomorrow am I'll have it up for the world to see. It will show 3 hook ups in a matter of minutes, proving there's plenty of fish to be caught.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

It was a banner day and for all of the people who are cancelling their reservations, you are very foolish, but it's okay, because everyone that's here in Pulaski NY would prefer not to have more people standing next to them fishing. They want it all to themselves. As for us, we want you here because the time is now...and the fishing is great! Low water and no rain is not an issue at this point and the fishing in Pulaski NY on the Salmon River will only get better. I would say that today was not the "Motherload" but definitely a LOAD of fish. That's my report......come in at 4:30 am and see us. We'll tell you where you should go and what the best spot would be for you.
Oh, and soon I will not have too much time to do my reports. Especially on the weekends. They will have to wait because I really need to take care of business in my shop and also my lodging guests.

Salmon River FYI-

There are three strains of trout. The first is the Steelhead, the second is the Rainbow trout, and the third is the Brown trout.

These fish generally average from 3 lbs. to the 15 lb range although some will exceed the weight and climb to over 20 lbs. The steelhead record was just eclipsed this passed year (August 2004) it weighed just under 32 lbs.

There is a limit on how many you can catch per day. You are allowed three per day. However, only one of them can be a Steelhead.

The season starts October 1st and runs through September 30th for your license.

The actual trout run starts in October. The trout will migrate into the river to eat the eggs of a spawning salmon.

For the winter run, November is the peak time. The same fishing rules apply as in October.

In February and March the spring thaw begins and the water rises, thus bringing in the trout for their spawning run.

In March and April, the trout do what is called the drop back season. They are heading back to the lake, so by now they are spread out throughout the river and can be caught anywhere. But keep in mind in the second period, due to the falling temps and rising snow, it can be difficult to fish.

Fishing pressure in the upper end of the river has been lite and anglers have reported fish holding in the deeper holes such as Sportsman Pool, Trestle Pool and Schoolhouse Pool.

For all you guys in the Lowell Mass area, we just received a copy of an article written by Bill Biswanger, Sun Outdoors Writer, stating that "...the state has closed the Salmon River". Not so, the only section of the river closed is the quarter mile section of the lower fly fishing only in Altmar. The rest of the Salmon river is open to fishing.

Ha ha ha .. ah those Lads sure do have a sence of humor up there in Lowell... Just those Kennedy people having some fun with Hillary.... again.

Hotty Holly: Nipples and King Salmon? Sure!

9_23_07HottyHolly_2.thumb.jpg
Okay, for all you men out there who love hot babes, here's "Hotty Holly" who I had the pleasure of photographing on Sunday while at the Fish-On! cleaning station. John and I were over there getting his brother's salmon cleaned while Miss. Holly pulled up with a King Salmon of her own. Earlier she was in my shop and I told her that she was as hot as the girl on the cover of this year's 2008 "Women In Waders" calender. So, what do you think? I just have to say that she's a great sport and if this picture offends anyone, too bad. Don't look. I thought it was a great shot of a beautiful woman and a King Salmon.....hey, that's a cool thing. So, enjoy the read and the photo too. Miss. Holly, thank you for the shot and if you want to see another great shot of Miss. Holly, please go ahead and click here, you know you want to!

Don't know about you guy's, but I am sitting here looking and hoping (praying.. pleading..) for that salmon to make one final leap....

Are you kidding! That salmon was happy right where he was.

Never thought I'd wanna be a mud shark.

OK.. had my fun...

CD Douglaston Salmon River 9/27/07

There were good numbers of Kings through out the run today.

The water level is at 100 cfs. Water temperature was 68 at noon.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report

On Thursday rain was in our forecast but it didn't arrive until late in the day. At this point we'll take whatever we can get and we were just happy that it rained. Yesterday was tough to beat in the lower end of the river, but anglers did report steady action with a mix of kings and cohos in the Ballpark, Town Pool, Staircase and Black Hole. The Douglaston Salmon Run reported there were good numbers of kings through out the run.

Yankee Fly Shop Report

A lot of anglers have caught fish and you can trust us when we say this because the proof is in our photo gallery....

We have had a couple of days with rain and that has helped. A fair size of Coho Salmon shot up the river yesterday and today they continue to come in.

The "motherload" that everyone seems to be waiting for has not happened yet and no one knows when it will happen except for the salmon. So, if you want to be here in Pulaski NY, great, come on up (or down).

If you have to call and ask if it's "worth it to come"....please stay home.

All the best action for fishing is in the lower river and that would be from Port Ontario at the Route 3 Bridge until the 81 Pool. As you know, the crowds will be where the best fishing action is. You can still catch fish in the mid-upper river however you will have to do a lot of walking.

CD Douglaston Salmon River Report 9/28/07

There was a trickle of Kings through out the run today.

We are sold out for Saturday, September 29. Presales for Sunday go on sale at 12 noon, until 6 pm.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report

On Thursday we had rain early in the morning, then showers late in the day. At this point we'll take whatever we can get and we were just happy that it rained. We knew yesterday would be tough to beat in the lower end of the river, but anglers did report steady action with a mix of kings and cohos in the Ballpark, Town Pool, Staircase and Black Hole. The Douglaston Salmon Run reported there were good numbers of kings through out the run. In the mid to upper section of the river anglers have reported fish holding in the deeper holes under lite fishing pressure.

It has appeared to this fisherman that the posting of Hottie Holly has brought a slight change in the fishing conditions on the Salmon River.

So for now on, when I call out to my fellow Salmon River fisherman to chant for rain... we shall just ask Dawn to post more photos of some hotties...

CD... place your tongue back inside your mouth... and quit day dreaming.

YANKEE FLY SHOP SALMON RIVER REPORT:

Today was overcast in Pulaski NY and the am bite was hot. The afternoon bite slowed and the fishing pressure increased as more and more anglers arrived to fish. The Douglaston Salmon Run was packed with people today and our lodging guests that went said it was crazy. While some of them caught fish.....(some were virgins and hadn't a clue), others hooked up but did not land anything. The mouth of the Salmon River is still boiling with fish and the lower end of the river is the best bet. So, from the Route 3 Bridge in Port Ontario to the 81 Hole would be considered the "Lower River". When the motherload comes in, you better be in the lower end of the river because even if you accidentally throw your line in, you will hook up. That's what it's like when the motherload comes in. Just tonight around 12:00 am one of my lodging guests heard 12 splashes out back in the "Town Pool" within 15 minutes so that means that there's fish moving. I love to hear it.....and you can even smell it.......yeah, the smell of fish in the air means it's coming soon.

On Saturday we had blue skies and plenty of sunshine. The fishing pressure has increased and the lower end of the river is getting the most attention. The Douglaston Salmon Run reported small numbers of kings moving through the run under heavy fishing pressure. Anglers fishing the Papermill, Ballpark, Town Pool, Staircase and Black Hole reported getting into a few kings and cohos. In the mid to upper section of the river anglers have reported fish holding in the deeper holes and the Trestle Pool had steady action on Saturday afternoon.

Whitaker's Weekend Report

Over the weekend we had blue skies with plenty of sunshine along with mild temperatures. The fishing pressure has increased and the lower end of the river is getting the most attention. The mid to upper end of the river has fish holding in the deeper holes under lite to moderate pressure depending on where your fishing. The Douglaston Salmon Run reported a good day was had by anglers throughout the entire DSR under heavy fishing pressure. Anglers fishing the Papermill, Ballpark, Town Pool, Staircase, Black Hole and Estuary reported getting into a few kings and cohos.

October 1st....

New York fishing licenses are on sale for 2008.

If you are heading up there, before you hit the river, get your 2008 license.

Otherwise, Officer Bernard Fife is on the look out.

As always, just do it.

I would suggest when you're in the Pulaski NY area that you take some time to go and visit the Salmon River Fish Hatchery which is located in Altmar. Just take route 13 into Altmar and then get onto County Route 22 or "Cemetary Rd." It's pretty simple. Ask someone if you're not sure. Taking a tour and learning about the hatchery and how everything works will help you better understand our fishery and what a great privelage it is to fish it! You can also call the hatchery and request a guided tour by Fran Verdoliva or one of the staff. The number is 315-298-5051. The Salmon River Fish Hatchery is open everyday from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. PRIME VIEWING TIME OF TONS OF CHINOOK & COHO SALMON, WITH SOME BROWNS AND SKAMANIA STEELHEAD IS MID SEPTEMBER until MID OCTOBER. It's really cool to see these fish and the kids go nuts!

I was actually up there for the first time on Sunday just before I left for home. Makes you wonder how those fish waiting to climb the ladders made it that far given the low water conditions and snaggers on every inch of the river. I would say that half the waiting fish either had a fly/lure sticking out of them or at least a gash in their torso.

Another great day was had by our anglers throughout the entire DSR, with a mix of Kings and Cohos. Fishing pressure was heavy.
We have plenty of passes available for Wednesday, October 3. Presales for Thursday go on sale at 12 noon, until 6 pm.

The water level is at 100 cfs. Water temperature was 62 at noon.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report

Despite the low water conditions due to lack of rain, most of the anglers we've spoken with had kept a positive attitude and are making the most of difficult conditions. The fishing pressure has increased and the lower end of the river continues to produce the most action along with the most pressure. With the low water we do have fish holding throughout the river in the deeper holes, with the mid to upper section getting the least amount of pressure. The DSR, Estuary, Blackhole, Staircase, Town Pool and Ballpark continue to produce the most action under heavy fishing pressure. The Douglaston Salmon Run reported another great day was had by it's anglers throughout the entire DSR with a mix of kings and cohos under heavy fishing pressure.

Thats the sad part about this years run. Unless the area get rain of biblical proportions it doesn't look like it will get any better for the fish.

Starting to wonder what effect it will have in a few years as to kind of return run to expect.

Low water, low turn out of fisherman, the local economy will take a huge hit.

Just have to keep chanting for rain...

As always, never one to give in...
